Selene got home with so much burden in her heart that she could barely sleep that night. She kept pacing around her room with all kinds of uncertainties running through her mind.
She was so engrossed in her thoughts that she had no idea it had been over 6 hours!
At exactly 12am, Selene stood before her mirror.
“I've had my fair share of poverty”
“The Hales offered me this contract, because they think I'll be easy to control, rather than some Princess for their son”
“I won't be a pawn, I'll be the sharp knife right in front of them, yet hidden”
She affirmed these things looking into the mirror with a grin on her face, then she reached for her bed and slept.
At the buzzing of her phone, she struggled to get out of bed.
It's Mr Hale’s PA calling.
She took her phone, sat up, and answered the call like she's been waiting for it.
“A package that includes your dress, shoes, and address to the Hales’ tower will be delivered to you shortly, get ready to meet the Hales over dinner tonight” the PA said
“Got it,” Selene responded calmly, then hung up the call.
A delivery guy showed up at her door about 30 mins later with a huge package in his hand.
“From the hales” he said
Selene collected it and shut her door
“Let's get into character” Selene murmured with a loud sarcastic chuckle.
By 6pm, She got dressed.
The dress fitted perfectly.
She was totally different from what she used to be, not just with how she looked, but also with her charisma.
She was so ready to swim in this ocean of wealth, caliber, and mystery.
Selene showed up in front of the Hales tower, confident, strong-willed, and majestic.
She located the forty-third floor and waited for the PA to announce her presence.
Shortly after, the PA ushered her to a large room with glittering walls and titles that felt like gold.
Mr Gillian Hale sat at the center of the room with his legs crossed.
Mrs Cassandra, Gillian's wife who was adorned in shiny diamonds that could blind you if you looked too much, sat majestically at the right side of her husband.
She looked at the young woman and murmured to herself.
“Good evening Mr &Mrs…..”
Before Selene could finish, Mr Gillian cut her short “No need for pleasantries, sit!” he commanded
She sat, with a straight face, confidently.
The huge room door swung open.
Sabastian Hale, the crippled Hale’s prince wheeled himself in.
He didn't look sad or pitiful.
His chin was up, relaxed, like a true prince. Deep down he knows he's just a liability that can be tossed in any direction by his parents.
Would things have been different if he weren't crippled?
Or his parents already saw him as a means to an end from the beginning?
The moment he settled at the table, Mr Gillian flung the contract papers at Selene's face.
Selene felt so disrespected.
But who is she to express such emotions?
She wouldn't even dare to utter any word that would destroy what's about to unravel, right before her.
She gathered the papers carefully.
Spent some time going through each of them.
She sighed at the content in the papers, but she has come too far to go back now.
She picked up the fountain pen on the table, and signed where she ought to.
She looked at Sabastian from the end of the table, their eyes locked for a minute as though they were communicating with each other.
His eyes were so beautiful. It was filled with bravery and control.
“You know you don't have to do this”, Sabastian finally broke the silence
“You may think this is worth your little life, but it's really not”
“Run while you can now”
“An heir in 3 years after marriage isn't unachievable, Sabastian” Selene fired back at him
“Case closed” Mrs Cassandra who had been watching the entire drama between the two, finally said and walked out of the room.
Mr Gillian stood up, adjusted his tie, and followed.
The tension in the room was heavy and almost tangible.
Selene walked towards Sabastian
Bent beside him and looked him in the eyes
“I’ll protect this marriage, and make things work out” she said
Sabastian who knows the hidden secret among the Hales.
Shook his head, looked into her eyes, like he was reading what it was saying.
Sternly responded “Let's see how that actually plays out”
The Hales must think they have it all at the snap of their finger, but the table is about to turn, dangerously.
The next day, they proceeded to the county clerk’s office to apply for a marriage licence.
It was very fast. No drama. No celebration.
Mr Gillian and Cassandra were the witnesses during the application. All legal papers got signed, and they left in their van.
The drive was silent. The experience was nothing like the usual marriage process where there's jubilation and so much festivity in the air.
