Chapter Three: Tearing clouds

937 Words
“Miss Althea Evans?” asked a young lady who sat anxiously beside Althea. Althea turned in surprise towards her direction, and was welcomed by a warm smile. “Do I know you?” Althea asked politely. This stranger still had her ‘million dollars worth’ smile on. “ Please do not be offended. You got the top score in the pre-final interview last week. You are just a subject of interest, to me” she responded. This little lady before her, didn't seem anxious anymore. She had grown a little confident since they discussed . Anna had just moved to Greece from her home country, Canada. It hadn't been easy, but here she was. She recently buried her last family member, her mother. Technically, she was alone. „Here, you were thinking that coming to the same company that kicked you out last week was a bad idea,” Althea told herself. She was back. It wasn't going to be easy for a female to get a job at a construction company in Greece, but the Petrakos Construction company had a considerable quota towards employment of women. This was going to be the final interview. The CEO included. “Golden locks,” said Althea under her breath. “Next person!” Called the secretary as she poked her head from behind an office room. “See you soon I hope and good luck,” said Althea to Anna. She pushed the heavy glass door with her might, but still making sure she showed no signs of weakness. There he was, sitting on the largest seat in the room, like it was his f*****g throne. His dark eyes lit up with mischief and an evil smirk hung on his face, but he didn't say a word. “ Better keep things that way, coffee boy,” she said to herself. The interview was a success and drawing to a conclusion, when he finally decided to say something. “I would like a room with Miss Althea,” said Acheron. It was more of a command than a request. It didn't take long until they were alone. “I don't understand why you are picking on me or what is going on, but can we act like we don't know each other? Like a boss and employee relationship,” said Althea. She was the first to break the silence enveloping the room. “I can't,” came his response. Suddenly, he seemed to be dragging himself off his seat, in exhaustion. “Not with those eyes,I can't. You just really seem interesting. I like to shake special things to test if they either break or stay. None have stayed. You want a job. Fine then, you're hired as my secretary. I think you need it more than I do, since someone didn't show up at the coffee shop last time. Let's see how long you can last,” said Acheron. He seemed to be struggling with his last sentence. “Are you okay?” Althea asked, concerned. She moved closer to him and watched as he struggled to breath, her survival instincts kicked in and her legs and hands began to move faster than her mind could grasp the situation. She ran outside, screaming for someone to get the medics. Several questions were asked, several questions she couldn't answer. It had happened without any warning. She had gotten home that day,in the worst state of mind. As she sat by her window, trying her best to enjoy staring at the moon. “Let's see how long you last,” he had said. She laughed at the thought of it. Ring, ring. She stretched out and grabbed her phone. Golden locks. The caller ID showed. Who saved his number to my phone? She asked. “These are my resting hours, sir,” she said, the moment she answered. “You seem to be holding up really well. Did you like the game? You should have seen the look on your face,” came his response. She could feel her blood heating up, underneath several layers of her skin. “It was just a prank?!” She yelled and cut the call. “There goes my resting hours,” she said in annoyance. „I know right…I heard she tried sleeping with him. I'm pretty sure her ugly face frightened him and gave him a chest ache,“ said a colleague to another at work. They didn't mind that she could hear them. First day at work, and they believed she tried to seduce that lunatic. She bent her face down and began proceeding to the printing machine at the office general room. “Excuse me, sir” she said, not hiding her bitterness as she emphasized on the sir. Acheron had just concluded a board meeting with the company shareholders. He paused in the hallway, and turned to listen to her. “The files you wanted are -” she couldn't finish her statement because he just walked out on her. In front of the company employees. Her coworkers. She wished the ground would open and swallow her. „I guess she doesn't know her place yet,“ said someone from the crowd. The laughter that followed forth was indeed embarrassing. She made her way back into her little office and locked the door behind her, as she got in. Ann had got the job,but she didn't want to be seen with her; either it's because of the rumors or the fact that she perhaps doesn't want to look bad to her fellow colleagues. “It's fine,” she said out loud with a broken voice.
