LOVE AT LAST

CHAPTER 6: The gunshot tore through the darkness. Liana Hart screamed instinctively as something heavy collided with her, knocking her backward onto the floor. A second later, the lights flickered back on. She blinked rapidly. Adrian Vale was on top of her, one arm braced beside her head, the other wrapped around her waist protectively. For a breathless second, neither of them moved. Then Liana saw the shattered lamp across the room. The bullet had hit the wall behind where she had been standing. Adrian lifted his head, eyes scanning the apartment. “Stay down.” “I’m not a child,” she snapped, though her voice shook. “No,” he said quietly. “You’re the reason I just lost my mind.” Before she could reply, footsteps pounded in the hallway outside. Adrian rose quickly and crossed to the door. He yanked it open. Two security men dragged a struggling figure inside. Gabriel. His once-calm smile was gone. “You set me up,” Gabriel hissed. Adrian’s expression was ice. “You walked straight into it.” Liana pushed herself to her feet, heart racing. “What is this?” Adrian looked at her. “The truth.” He nodded toward one of the guards, who handed him a small device. “A signal jammer,” Adrian said. “Gabriel cut the lights, hoping to scare you and force you into trusting only him. The gunshot was from his man in the corridor.” Gabriel laughed bitterly. “She still won’t choose you.” “This isn’t about choosing me,” Adrian said. “It’s about ending you.” Liana stared at Gabriel. The polished mask she remembered from childhood had cracked completely. “Why?” she asked. “Why do this to my family?” For the first time, Gabriel’s eyes hardened. “Because your father was weak.” The room went still. “He wanted out,” Gabriel continued. “He wanted to expose everything. He thought honesty would save him.” Liana’s hands trembled. “You betrayed him.” “I survived him.” Adrian stepped forward. “You used my father too.” Gabriel smirked. “Victor Vale needed money. I needed influence. We used each other.” Liana felt sick. Years of grief. Years of hatred. Built on half-truths and manipulation. “My father,” she whispered. “Is he alive?” Gabriel said nothing. Adrian answered instead. “No.” Liana looked at him sharply, pain slicing through her chest. “The photo was old,” Adrian said gently. “We traced it tonight. Your father died three years ago in hiding.” Her knees nearly buckled. Adrian reached for her, but she stepped away, needing space to breathe. Gabriel watched with cruel satisfaction. “See? Pain always returns.” Something in Liana snapped. She crossed the room and slapped him so hard his head turned. “This,” she said, voice shaking, “is for my mother.” Then she hit him again. “And that is for every year I hated the wrong people.” The guards tightened their grip as Gabriel spat blood and laughed. “You think this changes anything?” “It changes everything,” Adrian said. Sirens wailed below the building. Gabriel’s smile faded. Adrian took the necklace from the table and held it up. “This was wired with storage data,” he said to Liana. “Your mother hid evidence inside it. Accounts, names, transfers, recordings. Enough to bury Gabriel and everyone tied to him.” Liana stared. “My mother knew?” “She knew danger was coming,” Adrian said. “She protected you the only way she could.” The apartment door opened again. Police officers entered swiftly, taking Gabriel into custody. As they dragged him out, he twisted back toward Liana. “You’ll still end up alone!” The door slammed behind him. Silence followed. Real silence this time. No lies hiding inside it. No threats. Only the sound of Liana trying not to cry. She sank onto the couch, suddenly exhausted. Everything she had carried for years felt too heavy now that she could finally set it down. Adrian stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets, watching her carefully. “You knew parts of the truth,” she said without looking up. “Yes.” “You should have told me sooner.” “Yes.” “You’re arrogant.” A small smile touched his mouth. “Yes.” She looked up despite herself. “That answer was irritating.” “I know.” For the first time in what felt like forever, Liana laughed. It came out broken and soft, but real. Adrian’s expression changed at the sound. Softer now. Unarmored. He walked over and sat beside her, leaving space between them. “I was trying to protect you,” he said. “I don’t need protecting.” “No,” he agreed. “You need honesty. I’m late, but I’m learning.” She turned the necklace over in her palm. “What happens now?” “Gabriel goes to prison. My father faces charges tied to the records. Vale Corporation gets rebuilt properly.” “And me?” Adrian looked directly at her. “You get whatever life you choose.” The room grew still again, but in a different way. Liana searched his face. The coldness she once hated was gone. In its place was a man who looked tired, sincere… and strangely vulnerable. “And if I choose revenge again?” she asked quietly. “Then I’ll deserve it.” “And if I choose peace?” “I’ll help you protect it.” She swallowed. “And if I choose you?” For the first time since she’d met him, Adrian Vale looked stunned. Then he leaned closer, voice low. “I’d spend the rest of my life trying to be worthy of that mistake.” Tears burned her eyes again, but these were different. She closed the distance first. The kiss was slow at first, uncertain from too much history and too many wounds. Then it deepened. Months of tension. Years of pain. Everything they had nearly destroyed. When they finally pulled apart, Adrian rested his forehead against hers. “So,” he murmured, “does this mean you’re done slapping me?” “No promises.” He laughed softly. Morning light began to creep through the windows, turning the city gold. Liana stood and walked toward it. For years she had returned to destroy this city. Now she was seeing it for the first time. Adrian came to stand beside her. His hand found hers. She let it stay. Below them, sirens faded into distance. The night was over. At last. No more revenge. Only truth. Only healing. Only love. And when Adrian intertwined his fingers with hers, Liana realized something she never thought possible. She had not lost everything in the fire. Somehow, after all the ashes— She had found home.
