Chapter 7The Duke and Selina entered the Church and found that they were in a wide square passage that obviously encircled the actual Chapel itself.
They could see their way by the light of the little candles lit in front of the shrine to the Virgin Mary.
As they hurried past it, Selina noticed that the walls of the passage were covered with framed pictures, drawings and letters.
But there was not time to do anything but to hurry on hearing behind them the heavy footsteps and the voices of their pursuers.
They found the entrance to the Chapel and on entering found that it was illuminated not only with candles in front of statues but also by the Sanctuary lamps over the altar.
Kneeling on the altar steps there was a Priest.
