CATHERINE The following few days were filled with an awkward silence. Ronald had made sure Ellie was settled into her own room, Ellie still wasn’t talking to me, I refused to stay in the same room as Ronald. I couldn’t. And Stacey called me, bawling her eyes out when she’d gone over my house and saw the redecorations those nice men had left behind. We had a video call for almost two hours where I convinced her that I was fine. She didn’t believe me but I managed to convince her not to tell Marcus, I had no idea where he was but it was a good thing he wasn’t around. My feet padded into the kitchen, slapping against the cold marble floor. The low hum of the refrigerator was the only thing that filled the silence but it was enough to muffle the thoughts that threatened to drag me under.
