CATHERINE The metal was cold in my hand, but grounded me, reminding me of what was most important to me. Family. If I couldn’t protect the only one I had left, then everything I’d endured, every sacrifice, every line I’d crossed meant nothing. I wasn’t shaking… more like numbness which surprised me. I’d always imagined that killing someone would come with panic, second guessing, probably a voice in my head screaming don’t. There was nothing like that. Only static and silence. I checked the chamber the way Marcus had once taught me, years ago, back when life wasn’t so straight forward . A bitter laugh escaped my lips at the thought. When has my life ever been straight forward? I thought by now I would be riding steadily through the social ladder, making connections of a lifetime.
