THE LIGHT WITHIN

627 Words
Vera Morning came softly, washing the city in silver. The storm had passed, but the air still smelled like thunder — and fear. Jona and I found shelter in a little café that was barely awake. The windows were fogged, the lights dim, and the hum of the espresso machine was the only sound brave enough to fill the silence. I sat across from him, hands wrapped around a mug I didn’t really drink from. My fingers still trembled. Every few seconds, he looked up like he wanted to say something, but couldn’t find the words. Finally, I spoke first. > “You saw it too, right? The creature… and the light.” He nodded. “Yeah. I saw you. You saved us.” > “I didn’t save anyone,” I whispered. “I lost control. If that thing comes back—” > “Then it comes for both of us,” he said, steady. “We face it together.” The words shouldn’t have meant so much, but they did. The way he said together made something fragile inside me steady itself. It was strange — I had no reason to trust him, no history between us — and yet, every moment near him felt like remembering a song I’d once loved. --- Jona Her hands were still shaking. Without thinking, I reached across the table and covered them with mine. For a moment, neither of us breathed. Her skin was cool from the rain, but beneath it, I felt that same quiet energy — the one that had surged through me when she’d touched me last night. Like light searching for a way out. > “You’re not alone, Vera,” I said. “Even if the world doesn’t make sense right now… you’re not alone.” She looked up, her eyes shining with something raw. “Why do you care so much? You don’t even know me.” I smiled faintly. “Maybe I’m just not meeting you for the first time.” Her lips parted — a small breath, almost a laugh, almost a sob. I didn’t know which. And for a heartbeat, the distance between us vanished. She leaned closer, and so did I, until the world blurred into nothing but warmth and the faint scent of coffee and rain. But before our lips met, the light at her neck pulsed once — gentle, warning. We both froze. --- Vision — The Echo of Heaven A rush of gold. A garden that wasn’t a garden, suspended in starlight. A man with silver eyes touching a woman’s cheek, whispering against her skin. > “Even if they cast us apart, I will find you again.” The vision shattered like glass, leaving behind only that voice — that promise — lingering in both of their hearts. --- Vera I blinked, the café fading back into view. My heart was racing, but it wasn’t from fear this time. > “Did you… see that too?” I asked softly. Jona nodded, eyes wide. “Yeah. I think… I think that was us.” The words trembled between us, delicate and impossible — yet somehow, completely true. I reached for his hand again. “Then maybe we were never really strangers.” Outside, the rain had stopped. The clouds parted just enough for a single ray of light to fall across the table, catching the pendant around my neck. It shimmered, alive. > “We have to find out who we were,” I said. “And what this light wants from us.” Jona’s thumb brushed the back of my hand, grounding me. “Then we start with that. Together.” For the first time in what felt like lifetimes, I smiled.
