SERENA'S POV Silence filled the space again. The food she brought sat untouched beside me, but I had no appetite. My mind was far too restless. I leaned back against the bed, staring blankly ahead. Everything felt... complicated. Too complicated. I didn't want to think about mates or bonds or prophecies. I didn't need a man in my life. Not now.Not ever. He doesn't even want you, a voice in my head whispered. My chest tightened painfully. I clenched my fists, trying to push the thought away but it lingered. I let out a slow breath and sat up, wrapping my arms around myself. The room had grown darker. Night was falling. Outside, the wind began to howl, rattling the windows slightly. A storm was coming. I stared toward the window as the first drops of rain began to fall. The sound grew heavier by the second, loud enough to make it seem like the building itself might give in. I sighed softly. Tonight was going to be a long night. Then I heard it. A faint sound.Footsteps. My body stiffened instantly. I held my breath, listening carefully. Nothing. Maybe I was imagining things. Maybe I was just overwhelmed. I shook my head slightly and tried to relax. But then there it was again. Clearer this time. Someone was definitely outside. My heart began to race. Slowly, I pushed myself off the bed and walked toward the door. Each step felt heavier than the last. I reached for the handle And just as I was about to open it The door burst open. I gasped, stumbling back. My eyes lifted And my entire body froze. It was him. Alpha Kane. Shock rooted me in place. I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. He stood there, his presence filling the entire room, his expression unreadable. My heart pounded wildly in my chest. "What are you doing here?" I finally managed to ask, my voice barely above a whisper. Lucia would lose her mind if she saw him here. Did she even know? He didn't answer. Instead, he stepped closer and grabbed my hand. A gasp escaped my lips. "What are you doing? Let go of me!" But he didn't listen. He lifted my hand and pressed it firmly against his chest, as if searching for something. For a moment... everything stilled. Then his expression changed. Realization. Shock. And then Disgust. He released me immediately, as if my touch burned him. "This can't be happening," he muttered. "You can't be my mate." The words cut deeper than any wound. I forced myself to stay calm. "You can just reject me," I said quietly. He looked at me, his gaze cold. "You're nothing but a pup," he said harshly. "And a maid. I could never be with someone like you." My chest tightened, but I refused to let him see how much it hurt. "Then reject me," I repeated. For a moment, he said nothing. Then suddenly, he grabbed my arm. Before I could react, pain shot through me. I gasped as he cut my skin open. Blood welled up instantly. "What are you doing?!" I cried. He ignored me. Calmly, he dipped his finger into my blood and brought out a small vial from his pocket. He applied something to the wound. Almost instantly, the pain faded. I stared at him, confused and shaken. "What did you just do?" "This is the only way," he said. "If I don't do this... I won't have peace." He lifted his hand slightly. "I, Kane Zane, Alpha of Bloodmoon Pack, reject—" A loud noise interrupted him. Footsteps.Voices. Lucia. My eyes widened in panic. He heard it too. For a split second, uncertainty crossed his face but it was already too late. The door flew open. Lucia stepped in. Her eyes immediately landed on us. Shock flashed across her face as she looked between him and me. She has so many questions to ask but didn't know where to start. I know her like the back of my hand. Kane quickly hid my injured hand behind him, his expression turning calm as if nothing had happened. I forced myself to stay composed. "What's going on here?" Lucia demanded. Kane opened his mouth to speak But I spoke first. "He got lost," I said quickly. "I was just about to show him the way back to the main house." Lucia narrowed her eyes, clearly suspicious. But she couldn't question him. Not when he was her guest. "Oh... is that so?" she said, forcing a smile. "Please, Alpha, this way. I'm so sorry this... girl disturbed you." Kane said nothing. But before leaving, he glanced back at me. There was something in his eyes. Confusion. He had lots of Questions to ask. Then he turned and followed her out. The door closed again. I stood there, unmoving. My heart pounded loudly in my ears.He didn't finish it.The rejection. It wasn't complete. What does that mean? Does it mean... Are we still bound? I let out a shaky breath. Everything was becoming more complicated. And I hated it. A few minutes later, Lucia returned. And just like always. The punishment followed. The lashes. The insults. The pain. But this time, it didn't hurt the same. Because my mind was somewhere else.On him.On the bond. On the fact that no matter how much he denied it, Something still tied us together. But why is he here? I'm sure his little engagement with Emma had something to do with something else. I can't be fooled . I know Lucia is planning to take control of Dad's pack. She needs an alliance. Could Alpha Kane be among her alliance? I hope he isn't stupid enough to see that she is wicked and doing all things possible to secure a spot in the high-class world. I need to find a way to stop her. I can't let her have what belongs to Dad. I can't. Dad needs his freedom. I need to find a way to rescue him from her clutch . I sat on the floor wallowing in pain.
