28 Besieged “Um… Rae, you want to take a look at this.” Raedrick pulled the makeshift bandage tight around the thug’s belly and looked back at Julian. He sat crouched on the rock island, such as it was, and had the chest open. But his tone said what was inside the chest was not good. Raedrick pushed himself to his feet, suppressing a grunt as the pins and needles stabbed into his foot again. He hobbled, still more slowly than he would prefer, over to the edge of the nearly-vanished pool. “What is it?” Julian rose to his feet and hopped off the rock and back to the edge of the pool. “Tolburt wasn’t the only one who got conned.” He held out a folded piece of parchment.
