22 Evacuation First light came sooner than Raedrick’s body would have liked. It seemed he had only just closed his eyes when Julian was shaking him awake. He blinked away the sleep, fighting off the urge to just lie back, shut his eyes, and get a few more minutes of rest. Just a few more minutes. With a grunt, he forced himself to sit up, only remembering that the ceiling was low above the top bunk where he lay when he hit his forehead on one of the ceiling timbers. That knocked the sleepiness right out of him. “They just put that there,” Julian quipped as Raedrick clutched at the swiftly-growing lump, but from his tone his heart was not in the jibe.
