The drive back to the mansion was quiet, suffocating with the weight of what I had done.
I sat in the back seat, fingers curled in my lap, staring at the city lights as they blurred past. Blackwood’s hand rested lightly on the seat beside me—calm, unreadable—but I could feel the approval simmering beneath his composed exterior.
I didn’t want his approval.
I wanted my family to be untouched, my father to keep some shred of dignity—but that illusion had vanished the moment I signed the document.
By the time we arrived at the estate, night had fallen. Shadows stretched across the marble floors, long and accusing.
Lucien didn’t speak as he led me to my wing. He simply opened the door and gestured for me to enter.
Alone, I sank onto the bed, every muscle trembling. My thoughts spiraled, replaying the faces in that boardroom—the fear, the resignation, the silent questions my father had asked with his eyes.
The cost of loyalty had never felt so heavy.
Hours later, there was a soft knock.
“Come with me,” Lucien said quietly.
I followed him to the study, expecting praise or instruction.
Instead, he closed the door behind us, leaning against the desk with an intensity that made my heart hammer in my chest.
“You signed,” he said simply. “Your loyalty is proven. But you look… burdened.”
I swallowed. “It’s not just loyalty,” I admitted. “It’s… betrayal. I signed away something that wasn’t mine to give.”
He studied me, eyes sharp and unreadable. “Sacrifice is part of power, Elara. Loyalty without sacrifice is meaningless.”
I flinched. “But at what cost?”
Lucien moved closer, voice low, almost intimate. “That’s for you to decide. Every choice you make from now on carries weight. And the consequences… they always find you.”
He paused, letting the words settle. “Tonight, rest. Tomorrow… the lessons continue.”
I nodded silently, knowing that even in sleep, I would not escape the gravity of what had been done.
The mansion felt colder, larger, more oppressive than ever.
And yet, deep inside, a fire refused to die.
I had chosen survival over pride.
But I had not yet surrendered myself entirely.
And that would be the next battle.
