NANI'S POV, August 4th, 2019
My hands were cramped, my neck was tilting, I was sweating so much I felt like melting, and my eyes were heavy with tiredness. I rested my eyes a bit to give me a little sense of relief, only to be given a hot slap on my back. I cried in pain and turned to see the warden giving me the side eye, clearly annoyed. I've been sewing steering for 3 hours straight; she should give me a break. But alas, I still had 20 more pillowcases to sew. I tried to excuse myself to the ladies' room, but apart from the look of the warden, she wasn't having it. So, I decided to keep my mouth shut and just lock in to my work.
It was 10:00 p.m. when I had just finished, and we were all rounded up and escorted to our cells. I slumped myself on the bunk and dozed off in tiredness. I looked at my numb hands, and memories started to linger in my mind... 5years ago
Year 2014
I used live my friend Natasha. We had been friends all our lives; we were really close. We used to stay in an orphanage, but we hated it. No one wanted to adopt a 13 and near a 16-years old. Our caregivers were not angels. Miss Natalie, who was Natasha's maternal aun and one of the caretakers, was a vivid representation of how cruel this place is. You may think she would be more merciful to her niece, well, that was not the case; she was really not an angel either . She was a no nonsense woman with little or no lack of mercy.
Natasha spent almost all her life in the orphanage. based on what she told me, when she was 6 years old, her mom left her there. Her reason was unknown. She was told by her mom that she had an aunt who would take care of her and she needed to accept her as her new "mother". And that was the last she saw her mom.
I found solace in Natasha's company; she was a good friend. But her aunt was a real pain. She was quite a lady .
we had a part-time job at a fish and chips restaurant I worked in and we had ice cream together and lost track of time, missing curfew. And when we arrived, Natalie locked us outside the gate. Even the other caretakers were trying to vouch for us, but she wouldn't budge, and we had to sleep outside the gate the whole night, looking like some homeless people. Natalie smiling with her reddish nose looked at me, she walks a few blocks from the orphanage and she removed her beanie I looked at her in surprise what is this girl doing she picked a sunglasses from her pocket she took from her colleague at work place on her eyes and put her hand around mine and hold her beanie working around the block hand stretched "is she mad" I thought " you are absolutely shameless" I said to her" you're not really pretending to be blind to get some racks " she immediately shushes me and whispers" since Natalie wouldn't let us in we could mind as well use our time well" "but this is wrong"I clap back but she ignores me and keeps on walking we walkec around the street for about 2 hours and nothing placed in the beanie I begin to laugh well "if a actual blind beggar can make a struggle to get charity what makes you think you can get in night you may be broke but at least you are not blind be grateful "well if I can't beg my way into this I can find another way immediately tells me to run ahead and out of curiosity I did just that she then begins to call out a fake name and reaching for her hand an accidentally collide into a woman in her late 20s the naive woman pics her up and I run to her and approach her" careful now" exclaimed the lady in concern wow I can't believe she's actually buying it after the woman leaves I approached Natasha to see her smiling and removing a wallet from the back of our hand smiling at me sheepishly oh no she did not Natasha you did but she smiled nodding her head "yes I did " I looked at her in disappointment "oh what is not like I did an armed robbery or killed someone " she signal me to come with her and we go to the fish and chips restaurant where she worked in it was a 24 hours worked in place and her manager was quite kind to let us sleep in the storage unit when Natasha explained to him we made ourselves comfortable in the small space and use the jackets as mini duvet to cover ourselves who is sat down Natasha removed the wallet and began to ramage through it and she smiled when she picked out £150 from the pulse she smiled " well this is something " she exclaimed the isn't anything else that seem useful to my eye you check what fits your fancy if you want I hesitated then disagreed with her" no thank you" I lay down to sleep "Are you angry " at me she asked feeling a bit guilty " no ,i mean yes I don't know" I said confused. she just smiled and lower her head " you know I'm planning to leave the orphanage and I want you to come with me I've been saving up and maybe build a life somewhere else" I look at her shocked Natasha build your life somewhere else we won't even survive two weeks outside I know that Natalie can sometimes be no offense that she's your aunt an *sshole "it's not just that" she interrupted me look at us normal people won't want to adopt people at our age grade and The orphanage is struggling yeah I checked the files in their office and it's in a real financial dilemma and why do you think they are no more accepting more children and once all the children reach of age they're going to let them , its because its going to shut down but before that my aunt is going to withdraw from working there and take custody of me before that happened and I don't want that she was right ,not only that was she Natalie she was a total sociopath an an obsessive disciplinarian the owner of the orphanage wasn't always around because she did a different job in another town so Natalie was in charge most of the time and any child who was in bad behavior who pay a visit to the redemption room it was a very tiny room which is to be a*****e unlocked us there for maximum of 2 days or so the room only had a shelf with textbooks having the core subjects in the national school curriculum . we were also only allowed to go work and the orphanage nothing more. to make things worse The orphanage was struggling financially and they had to share the remaining children in the orphanage to other orphanages but it was remaining me Natasha and 7 other girls .
Miss Natalie and honestly weren't much of care giver , I mean it was not like there was any toddlers to cater for or anything . many of the girls have done different jobs to cater for them self but recently Natasha has been coming home a bit lately a one they I asked about her. constant sneaking out but she snaped at me I also found out she quit her job when I came to our workplace I asked her colleague and she said she hasn't been there for the past 2 months obviously I was too scared to ask l wasn't the type of linger around people's business especially that of Natasha misbehavior of hers has kept on happening for the a years now I should remind distant so have I was too busy with work and studies is too I couldn't go to school for a while now so the best I could do was followed the curriculum and home schooling.
