He didn’t say a word.
We made it back to the compound just after dusk.
Evan said nothing the entire walk.
But I could feel him burning
And when we finally reached the medical wing, he cornered me in the side hall, away from the crowd.
“Why did you do that?”
“I saved him.”
“You’re trying to expose yourself.”
“What do you mean?”
He just looked at me.
“I mean, I didn’t have a choice.”
“You always have a choice. It just happened.”
I looked at him. “So do you. And what do you mean expose myself?”
He did not answer and left.
The next day I tried to focus on the patrol reports.
Line by line, name by name, time by time.
But the words kept blurring on the page.
I blinked hard, and shook my head. “You’re fine,” I whispered to myself. “You’re just overthinking it.”
