There was a shift in the air the next day when I came to work, like a calm in the storm I couldn’t see yet.
People were watching me. Not overtly. Not all at once but I just felt it, in the awkward pause when I walked into the room, in the way two junior associates suddenly hushed their voices near the elevator, in how the receptionist smiled too widely today, but her eyes had something cold in them.
I wasn’t paranoid.
I’m sure I was being studied.
And Evan… that one has not spoken more than five words to me all day.
When I brought his files in that morning, he didn’t even grace up. He just said. “ leave them on the desk, and waved me off like I was dust on his sleeves.
I should’ve been relieved when he was quiet and not cruel.
