~~Mira~~ I went back to bed. The first night I heard it, I thought I was dreaming. A long, mournful howl cut through the night, low and distant— the kind that crawled up your spine and settled behind your ribs. I sat bolt upright in my bed, my heart throbbing. There was silence. I held my breath waiting. Nothing. Just the ticking of the office clock in my temporary suite, the hum of the hallway outside, and the faint buzz of the city that never really slept. Maybe it was a dog or my imagination. Too many late nights. Too much stress. I lay back down, stared at the ceiling, and forced myself to breathe. The next night it happened again. Louder. Closer.
