The following week at St. James Academy felt like walking into a storm. I knew Chloe Harrison wouldn’t let the lunchroom confrontation go unnoticed. She thrived on chaos, and I was now her target. Every hallway glance, every whispered comment, reminded me that this was far from over.
I tried to focus on classes, on my notes, anything to escape the whirlwind of thoughts about Xavier and Chloe. But even in Algebra, my mind drifted. Xavier’s words, his touch, his smirk—they haunted me, thrilling and terrifying me at the same time.
By the end of first period, it was clear: Chloe wasn’t planning subtlety anymore. I had just walked into the courtyard when I saw her, surrounded by a few of her loyal friends, whispering and laughing while casting pointed glances in my direction.
I felt my stomach twist. This was no longer a game. Chloe Harrison had escalated.
“Rose,” a voice called, breaking through my tension.
I turned. Xavier was standing a few steps away, hands in his pockets, that confident, infuriating smirk playing on his lips. He didn’t waste a second. Striding across the courtyard, he intercepted me before I could retreat.
“You okay?” he asked softly, his hand brushing lightly against mine—a reassuring gesture, simple yet intimate.
“I’m fine,” I said, though my voice wavered. “I just… Chloe. She—”
“I know,” he interrupted, eyes narrowing slightly as they scanned the courtyard. “And we’re going to deal with it.”
I frowned. “Deal with it? How?”
He leaned closer, his voice low, almost conspiratorial. “By knowing everything. About her… and about me. Secrets. Scandals. Things no one knows. That’s the only way to stay ahead.”
I blinked. “Your secrets? What do you mean?”
Xavier hesitated, a shadow crossing his face. Then he lowered his voice further. “My family isn’t exactly… normal. There’s a lot behind the billionaire façade. Things people don’t talk about. Things that could ruin lives if they got out.”
My pulse quickened. “You mean… scandals?”
“Yes,” he said simply, eyes darkening. “And not the kind you read in magazines. Real scandals. Things I’ve spent years hiding, things Chloe and others might try to use against me… against us.”
My chest tightened. I had imagined Xavier as a bad boy, arrogant and rich, but this… this was something entirely different. Layers beneath layers, secrets buried deep, and the stakes—my heart felt it—were higher than I could comprehend.
“Rose,” he continued, voice gentle but firm, “I can’t protect you from everything. But I can share this with you. If we’re going to be… whatever this is, you need to know who I really am. Not the Xavier King the world sees. Me. The real me.”
I swallowed hard, fear and anticipation twisting inside me. “Okay,” I whispered. “Tell me.”
He took a deep breath, and for the first time, his facade cracked. “My father… he’s ruthless. The business empire, the wealth, the fame—it came at a cost. People who got too close… vanished, financially or socially. My mother… she died when I was young, and my father blamed me for it. He controlled everything. Everyone. And anyone who disobeyed… suffered consequences. I’ve lived my entire life under that shadow.”
I stared at him, my heart aching. “Xavier… I had no idea…”
He shook his head. “Most people don’t. And that’s why I push everyone away. Chloe… she thinks she can manipulate me because she doesn’t know this. But she’s about to find out.”
I felt a chill run down my spine. “She’s going to try something… worse?”
Xavier’s lips pressed into a thin line. “She already has. That’s why I need you to be careful. But I also need you to trust me. Can you do that?”
“I… I think so,” I said, my voice tentative.
He leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “Good. Because things are going to get messy. And I don’t want you caught in the crossfire.”
Just then, a commotion erupted near the school entrance. I turned to see Chloe, her phone held high, broadcasting something to everyone around. My heart sank. She was live-streaming something—something that looked like Xavier.
“Chloe!” Xavier snapped, his usually controlled demeanor breaking. He stormed toward her, my hand slipping into his as we ran.
“What’s happening?” I whispered, panicked.
“She’s broadcasting me,” he muttered, voice tight with fury. “Trying to make me look… scandalous.”
By the time we reached her, a crowd had gathered. Students were whispering, phones out, filming. Chloe smirked triumphantly. “Nice to see everyone! Guess what I caught on tape? Our dear Xavier, up to his usual…”
I felt anger surge inside me—not at Xavier, but at her. “Stop it,” I shouted, stepping forward. “This isn’t funny!”
Chloe turned her glare on me. “And who asked you, Rose? You’re just the new girl, playing hero.”
Xavier grabbed my hand, firm and protective. “Don’t worry about her,” he said, his tone low, dangerous. “We’ll handle this.”
He stepped closer to Chloe, eyes blazing. “Rose and I don’t need your games, Chloe. Leave now, or you’ll regret it.”
The air crackled with tension. Chloe’s smirk faltered slightly, and she glanced at the growing crowd, realizing her plan might backfire. Without another word, she turned and stormed away, muttering threats under her breath.
I exhaled shakily, heart pounding. “Xavier… thank you.”
He turned to me, his expression softening. “You were brave,” he said. “You stood your ground. And that’s why I trust you. Not just with me… but with my life. My secrets.”
I looked at him, chest tightening. “Your secrets… I don’t know if I can handle them all.”
“You can,” he said simply. “Because I won’t let you face them alone. Ever.”
And for the first time, I realized that our connection wasn’t just about sparks or attraction. It was trust. Vulnerability. Dangerous, messy, and thrilling trust.
I didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. Chloe would return, scheming more than ever. Xavier’s past would continue to shadow him, dark and dangerous. But in that moment, standing there in the courtyard, I knew one thing:
I wasn’t running.
I was staying.
And I was ready to face every scandal, every secret, and every danger… with him.
Because Xavier King wasn’t just a bad boy billionaire.
He was my storm.
And I… was ready to dive in.
