SHADOWS OVER VERONICA

1272 Words
The Kingdom of Veronica was one of the oldest and most powerful kingdoms in the region. Surrounded by the sea on one side and three neighboring kingdoms on the other, Veronica had always been a land of wealth, power, and political ambition. Its magnificent capital stood at the heart of the kingdom, where the royal palace, noble estates, government halls, and the Imperial Court shaped the fate of thousands. But Veronica had not always been called Veronica. Centuries ago, the kingdom was founded by a remarkable woman named Veronica, a warrior, ruler, and visionary who united the divided lands under one crown. After her death, the kingdom was named in her honor. Since then, the throne of Veronica had passed through generations of royal blood. Now, the kingdom was ruled by King David. King David was respected throughout the kingdom, but his reign had recently become complicated by one question that remained unanswered. Who would inherit the throne? King David had four sons. The eldest prince was confident, ambitious, and highly influential within the royal court. He had always believed that he would eventually become Crown Prince and inherit his father's throne. The second prince was equally capable. Intelligent and politically cautious, he had his own supporters among the nobles. The third prince was very different from his brothers. He suffered from poor health and rarely involved himself deeply in court politics. Because of his condition, many believed he had little interest in the throne. The youngest prince was the complete opposite. Playful, charming, and unpredictable, he often appeared more interested in enjoying life than participating in royal affairs. Yet beneath their different personalities, all four princes shared one thing. Every one of them wanted the throne. King David had never officially named a Crown Prince. As a result, a quiet struggle had begun within the palace. It was not an open war. There were no armies marching through the streets. Instead, it was a cold war of influence, alliances, secrets, and political maneuvering. Every noble family watched the princes carefully, wondering which one would eventually rise above the others. There was another complication within the royal family. King David's current Empress had a son of her own, but despite being the Empress's child, he had not been named Crown Prince. The reason was deeply personal. Before the current Empress, King David had been married to his former Empress—the woman he had loved deeply. Even after her death, his feelings for her had never completely disappeared. Because of that old love, King David had refused to give her place and influence to the son of his current wife. The decision created another layer of tension inside the palace. While the royal family fought silently over succession, another powerful family was about to become the center of attention. The Watson family. Martin Watson, one of King David's most trusted and beloved ministers, had served the crown faithfully for years. He was respected by nobles and feared by those who knew how much influence he held within the royal court. His daughter, Eva Watson, was engaged to Ethan Forge, a wealthy and highly respected nobleman from the powerful Forge family. The marriage would have united two influential families. But neither family knew that their future was about to disappear in a single night. Because while the princes continued their silent struggle for the throne, something far more sinister was happening inside the capital. An entire family was about to be erased. And the person who would be left behind to uncover the truth… Was Eva. ______________________________ The carriage moved slowly along the winding road toward the capital of Veronica. Eva sat quietly by the window, staring at the passing countryside. The familiar forests, fields, and distant hills should have brought her comfort, but today, everything felt strangely unfamiliar. Her thoughts kept returning to the same question. Who could have done this to her family? Her father, Martin Watson, had been one of the Emperor’s most trusted and beloved ministers. He had served the crown for years and had earned the respect of nobles and commoners alike. And now he was dead. So was her stepmother. Her stepsister. Her stepbrother. Her uncle and his family. Her servants. And Ethan Forge—the man she had been promised to marry. How could an entire family be killed in a single night? Eva's hands tightened around the fabric of her dress. Across from her, Ruby noticed her pale expression. “Miss Eva, please don't torment yourself,” she said gently. “The investigators in the capital will find whoever did this.” Tina nodded beside her. “You should rest. You've only just recovered from your illness. You cannot let yourself become sick again.” Eva looked at them but said nothing. She wanted to believe them. She truly did. But something inside her told her that this was not a simple murder. There was something else. Something hidden. By sunset, the group decided to stop for the night at an old temple along the road. The temple stood quietly beneath the darkening sky, surrounded by ancient trees. Its stone walls were covered with carvings that were said to have existed since the founding of Veronica. Eva entered the temple alone. She knelt before the altar, but instead of praying, she lowered her head. Memories of her father flooded her mind. His warm smile. His gentle voice. The way he used to tell her that she had nothing to fear as long as he was there. But now… He was gone. A tear slipped down Eva's cheek. “Father…” Her voice trembled. “Why did you have to leave me?” She wiped her tears quickly. Then another thought entered her mind. Her father had always been careful. He had powerful enemies. He had political rivals. And now that he was dead, there was no one left to protect the Watson family. Eva slowly stood. If she wanted the truth, she had to start thinking like someone who had nothing left to lose. Four possibilities immediately came to mind. The first was the most terrifying. King David himself. If the King wanted someone dead, who could truly stop him? The entire kingdom was under his authority. He commanded the army, the court, and the law. But why would the King want Martin Watson dead? Eva couldn't find an answer. The second possibility was her younger uncle. Her father's younger brother had always been distant from the family. After Martin's death, he would become one of the people with the greatest interest in the family's wealth and influence. Could greed have driven him to murder? Eva shuddered. The third possibility was even more dangerous. One of the princes. The four princes were already locked in a silent struggle over the throne. King David had yet to name a Crown Prince, and every one of his sons wanted to secure his position. What if Martin Watson had refused to support one of them? What if his death was part of a larger political game? And then there was the fourth possibility. General Hedrick. Eva remembered hearing his name years ago. He had once been an old enemy of her father. Their conflict had never truly ended. If General Hedrick still held a grudge against the Watson family, perhaps Martin's death was revenge. Eva slowly clenched her fists. The King. Her uncle. One of the princes. General Hedrick. Four suspects. Four possible motives. But only one of them could have destroyed her family. Outside the temple, the wind suddenly grew stronger. Eva turned toward the dark entrance.
