Chapter 8: Appointments and Parties

Miguel glanced at the clock on the wall. It was almost 12pm and he was still very busy. He had offered to take Mikayla to lunch today and he was running late. He had thought he would have been done before 11pm but an important impromptu meeting had come up and they needed him.

Thank God he had made a reservation before he joined the meeting.

He checked the time again and saw that he was already an hour late.

He stood up as Maria,his secretary,walked in

“What is it Maria?" He asked

“Sir,your dad is here. In the board room" Maria said

“Oh,did he ask of me?" Miguel asked

“Yes,he did sir. That's why I'm here sir" Maria said,matter of factly

Why had his dad come today of all days?,he wondered

“Right. Thank you" he says and Maria leaves the office

Miguel walks towards the board room and he could hear laughters and noises coming from there.

He enters the room and sees his father, Mark and three other important board members.

“Good afternoon Mr Tunner,you asked for me" Miguel said to his dad

His dad looked up at him and smiled” Hey,you're here. Have a seat"

“I'll rather not sir. What will you have me do?" Miguel asked

His dad frowned and said “Sit down Miguel”

Miguel sighed and sat on one of the chairs

“I and others were just discussing your promotion to board chairman" his father said

Miguel looked at him,then to the others.

“That's a great honour sir" he says

“I'm sure you know that it has to be approved by the other board members of course but I've discussed it with these ones and they're okay with it" His father says. The others hummed their consent and his father comtinues “We'll just have you do one small task for us”

Miguel knew that something like this was coming ,he just didn't know which task they will want him to do. Besides,he was already two hours late and Mikayla was likely to kill him. He had even forgotten to text her that he was running late.

“What task might that be sir?”he asks

" Nothing much,you just have to go and handle our company's in Puerto Rico” Mark says

" For how many days?”Miguel asks

" For as long as it takes to finish up. Shouldn't take too long though”his father answers

Miguel sighs and says" Okay. Will that be all?”

" Yes yes. Thank you,you may leave now”his father says,waving him off .

Miguel gets up quickly and exits the room,taking the elevator to the last floor.

He hurriedly enters his car as soon as he gets down and rushes to the restaurant,calling Mikayla on his way.

He gets to the restaurant,unable to reach Mikayla.

He walks in and approaches the table he had reserved for the both of them but he couldn't find her there.

He keeps dialling her number but all to no avail.

The only option was to go to her store to find her but then would she want to see him or even look at him.

“God,I'm so stupid" he says to himself

“How may I help you sir?" A waiter says

" Yes yes. Do you know if my wife came in here? She's supposed to be waiting for me at this table “Miguel asks

" Can you describe her for me sir. A little description would help”the waiter says

" Umm, she's tall but not too tall, she's slender with pretty blue eyes ,and dark brown hair”Miguel says,describing Mikayla

" Oh yes yes, I saw her. Oh no,she just left not quite long" the waiter says

“Oh shoot,do you know if she ate anything?" Miguel asks

“Not at all sir. I kept coming to ask if she was ready to order but she kept saying that she was waiting for her husband. She did order a bagel on her way out though “the waiter says

"Okay then. Thank you, here's a tip”Miguel says,giving him an hundred dollar bill before exiting the restaurant.

Mikayla kept picking at her food ,thinking of last night. They had watched movies till the wee hours of the morning and she had gotten up and gone to her room when he had fallen asleep.

They had spoken well this morning before going to their respective work places and he had even offered to take her to lunch which she had agreed to. So the reason why he had refused to show up was what she couldn't understand.

She had waited for hours in the restaurant,looking like a girl that had been stood up by her date which was the case by the way. He had stood her up and she had made a fool out of herself.

Never would she fall for his tricks again

“Mikayla,are you okay? You've been picking at your food" Rosa said

Mikayla looks up to see Rosa staring at her with eyes full of pity

“Yes of course. I'm fine”she says

" You're not ill ,are you? It's still a bit too early for pregnancy symptoms but you can never tell “Rosa says

Mikayla spits out the water she had been drinking and started coughing. Rosa rushes to her side and starts to pat her back

“Easy easy" Rosa says

" Thank you”Mikayla says,as soon as she stops coughing

“And I'm not pregnant Rosa" she says after

“Oh ,Not yet"Rosa says,smiling and leaving her to finish her food.

Mikayla stares at her and allow herself to imagine carrying Miguel's baby. Then she shrugs and finishes her food, standing up to prepare for John and Casey’s party.

She just prays Miguel comes quickly so she doesn't have to go alone.

Miguel knocks softly on Mikayla's door and stops,waiting for a response.

“Come in" he heard Mikayla say and he enters almost immediately,closing the door behind him.

“Hi " he says

“Hello" she responds

He sees her struggling with the zipper of her dress and he moves close to her ,trying to help

“What are you doing?" She asks

“Hold still" he says,drawing the zip up

“I didn't need your help" she says

“Sure. It looked like you did" he says,touching her bare back and rubbing her shoulders

She moans softly ,as she tilts her head to the side. He kisses her neck and nibs on it before kidding her shoulders. As if brought back to reality,she pushes him away and steps back

“Who do you think you are?" She screams

“I'm sorry" Miguel says

“Oh so now you're sorry?"Mikayla asks

“I know I know. I got held up at work and …”Miguel says

" Oh save it. Just don't ghost me again at this party”she says,picking up her purse and walking out of the room,with him trailing after her.

Mikayla and Miguel step out of the car as they get to the house that John had described to Mikayla.

Checking her purse for the ring John had ordered,she walks to the front door without waiting for Miguel.

Miguel sighs and walks behind her,muttering a curse under his breath.

" Hiiii,welcome welcome”John says,as soon as he opens the door,kissing Mikayla on both cheeks

" Hello, congratulations”Mikayla says, smiling

Miguel looks at her and scoffs angrily

She never smiled at him like that,he thought

" And you must be..?” John asks,facing Miguel

" I'm Miguel, Mikayla's husband” Miguel says,pulling Mikayla by her waist.

" Oh hi hi. Casey was just asking of you”John says to Mikayla,pulling Mikayla by her hand inside.

Miguel follows them in ,frowning. He grabs a flute of champagne from a waiter,downing the whole glass.

He glanced around to see Mikayla talking to some people in a corner. She was laughing at a joke that some guy had said and the said guy had touched her by the arm.

He growled,irritated at the sight and sought to do something to get his mind of it.

He felt a gentle tap on his shoulder and turned to Kendra,one of his business associate.

“Hi Kendra" he says

“Hi Miguel. It's so nice to meet you,what a coincidence" Kendra says,hugging him and kissing him on both cheeks

“How are you?" He asks

“Oh the usual" she says,smiling

“What are you doing here?" She asks

“Oh I'm here with my wife. One of her customers is hosting the party”Miguel responds

“Oh wife?" She asks

“ Yes wife" he says, smiling

“Oh forgive my skepticism. I actually read the news but I just brushed it off as fake. So it is real" Kendra says

“It's fine. Well,there you have it" he says

“Well congratulations. When do I get to meet her?" Kendra says,hugging him again

“Soon,she should be around somewhere" Miguel says,looking around for Mikayla

“Oh oh. Well, it's so sad you're married but that shouldn't stop us if you know what I mean” Kendra says,battling her eyelashes flirtatiously

Miguel frowned and says “Look Kendra,I'm flattered really but like I said before,I'm married now."

“You don't think me beautiful,do you?" Kendra says, whimpering

“Oh no no. That's not it. You're an extremely attractive young woman but I'm married”Miguel says,laying emphasis on the married

“Now if you would excuse me,I'll like to find my wife now" he says again,before walking away.

Miguel sees people gathering and the host was clincking his glass,calling people's attention

“Thank you all for coming to the second anniversary of I and my beautiful wife's marriage" he says,his smile directed to a beautiful pregnant lady in the crowd.

“This last two years have not been rosy,trust me , we've had more fights than we've had s*x and we've had s*x plenty of times" he continues and the crowd laughs

“But I'm glad I was able to spend them with you because I love you and no one else”he says,holding out a ring and going on his knees in front of his wife. The crowd cheers and Miguel finds himself looking for Mikayla. He finally sees her and finds that she had been staring at him too.

He smiles at her and she smiles back. He blows her a kiss and she catches it,before throwing one back to him.

He motions for her to meet him by the door and she nods at him,muttering later.

She turns to keep looking at the young couple and he smiles,shaking his head.

After the whole proposal,he walks to the same place that Mikayla had been standing but could not find her there. He looked around,asking people if they had seen her but nobody had. He started panicking but calmed down and decides to check the ladies.

Approaching the ladies,he could hear arguments from inside and opened the door to see Kendra standing in front of Mikayla

“What a b***h" he could hear Kendra say

“Did you just call me a b***h?" Mikayla asked

“Yes I did and what are you going to do?" Kendra asks

Mikayla scoffs and starts to leave but Kendra pulls her back and raises her hand to hit Mikayla when Miguel says “What's going on here?"

Kendra drops her hand as soon as she sees Miguel and starts to play the victim.

" Miguel,this lady here was insulting me" she said,standing beside Miguel

Miguel ignores her and goes to Mikayla,cupping her cheeks

" Are you okay? You're not hurt,are you?”he asks

Mikayla stares at him and says "No no,I'm not”

Miguel hugs her and kisses her forehead before turning to Kendra

" Come an inch close to my wife next time and see what happens”he says,pulling Mikayla by her hand

" Well,erm,I ..”Kendra stammers

Miguel stops by the door and looks at Kendra “Also,our business is over. I'll have my secretary send you a letter. Nobody disrespects my wife and gets away with it" he says,before walking away with Mikayla.
