Behind Her Smile — Episode 12: The People Who Stayed

634 Words
The ride home was quieter than Elena expected. Chloe sat in the passenger seat scrolling through her phone while pretending not to stare back every few seconds. Ryan was driving. Elena sat in the back seat with her head resting against the window, watching city lights pass by. Nobody spoke. Not because they had nothing to say. Because they all knew something was wrong. And Elena knew it too. She just didn't know how to explain it. Ryan looked at the rearview mirror again. Then again. Then a third time. Finally Chloe sighed dramatically and turned around. "Okay, absolutely not." Elena blinked. "...What?" "This." Chloe pointed at her face. "This weird thing you're doing." Elena frowned. "What weird thing?" "The fake smiling thing." Ryan glanced at Chloe but didn't interrupt. Elena looked away immediately. "I don't know what you're talking about." Chloe stared at her. Then stared harder. "Oh wow. Look at that. Lying." "I'm not lying." "Elena." "I'm serious." "Elena." "..." Ryan suddenly laughed softly. Elena looked at him with disbelief. "You're laughing?" Ryan raised one hand dramatically while keeping the other on the steering wheel. "I'm staying out of this." "Liar," Chloe muttered. "Smart man," Ryan corrected. Despite herself, Elena felt the corner of her mouth lift slightly. Very slightly. Chloe immediately pointed. "There! THERE!" Elena looked confused. "What?" "You smiled." "I always smile." "No." Chloe's voice softened suddenly. "Not that one." The car became quiet again. Elena slowly looked down at her hands. Because Chloe was right. There was a difference. There was the smile she gave strangers. The smile she gave patients. The smile she used when people asked if she was okay. And then... There were real smiles. The ones that came naturally. The ones she hadn't felt in a long time. Ryan looked at her through the mirror again. His voice was softer this time. "You don't have to keep acting strong around us." Elena froze. Outside, the city lights kept moving. People crossed streets. Cars passed. Life continued. But inside that car, everything suddenly felt still. "I wasn't acting," she whispered. Ryan didn't answer immediately. Neither did Chloe. Because all three of them knew that wasn't true. Elena swallowed hard. For weeks she had carried everything by herself. Fear. Exhaustion. Pain. The pressure of pretending things were okay when they weren't. And every day she told herself the same thing: Just keep going. Just smile. Just survive today. She had become so used to carrying everything alone that she didn't even realize she was doing it anymore. Tears slowly started forming in her eyes. Elena immediately looked toward the window. No. Not now. She hated crying in front of people. Especially in front of Chloe. Because Chloe would never let her forget it. But then A hand gently touched hers. Ryan. She looked down silently. He wasn't saying anything. Wasn't forcing her to speak. Wasn't asking questions. He was just there. Then Chloe suddenly climbed halfway over her seat dramatically. "Listen to me carefully," Chloe announced. Elena looked at her with watery eyes. "What are you doing?" "I'm giving an important speech." "...Chloe." "No interruptions." Ryan sighed. "Oh no." Chloe ignored him. She looked directly at Elena. "I know you're hurting." Elena's expression slowly changed. "I know you've been pretending." Chloe's voice became quieter. "And I know you keep trying to protect everyone by carrying everything yourself." Her eyes softened. "But you're stupid if you think you're carrying it alone." Silence. Elena stared at her best friend. Then at Ryan. Ryan smiled gently. "She's right." And suddenly The tears Elena had been holding back for days finally fell. Not because she was weak. Not because she broke. But because for the first time in a long time... She remembered what it felt like to not be alone.
