Prologue
Dr Blackwood believed that by breaking Orion's mind and body, he could unlock the secrets of his poetic visions and harness the mysterious force that lurk the asylums walls. Dr. Blackwood's eyes gleamed with obsession as he gazed at Orion, strapped to the chair in the dimly lit chamber.
"Today, we finally unlock the secrets of the Echo," Blackwood whispered, his voice dripping with anticipation. "You will tell me everything, Orion. Your mind will be mine to command."
Orion's eyes, piercing blue, met Blackwood's with a hint of defiance. "You'll never break me," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
Blackwood sneered. "We'll see about that. My techniques are unmatched. You will succumb to my will."
The machines surrounding Orion hummed to life, casting an eerie glow on the scene. Blackwood's hands moved with precision, attaching sensors and electrodes to Orion's temples.
"This will hurt," Blackwood warned, a thrill of excitement in his voice. "But it's necessary. Your mind is the key to unlocking the Echo's power."
Orion's gaze never wavered. "You're wasting your time, Blackwood. I am not afraid."
The machines whirred, emitting a piercing whine. Orion's eyes fluttered, his body tensing. Blackwood watched, entranced, as the readings on the monitors began to spike. But as the minutes ticked by, Blackwood's excitement turned to frustration. Orion's mind refused to yield. The readings plateaued, and the machines' whine grew fainter.
"No," Blackwood muttered, his eyes darting between the monitors and Orion's unyielding face. "It can't be. I've never failed..."
Orion's whisper seemed to carry on the wind. "You'll never break me, Blackwood. I am the Echo's keeper."
Blackwood's face twisted in rage. "No! You will not defeat me!" He slammed his fist on the console, the machines falling silent.
In that moment, Blackwood realized the horrifying truth: he had underestimated Orion. The young man's mind was unbreakable, a fortress that would never yield to Blackwood's twisted desires.
The darkness in Blackwood's eyes deepened, his obsession curdling into madness. "Then I'll find another way," he hissed, his voice dripping with malevolence. "I'll find a way to harness the Echo's power, no matter the cost."
As Orion lay strapped to the chair, his mind was a tempest of emotions, each one wrestling for dominance. Fear clawed at his heart, threatening to consume him whole, yet defiance flared like a beacon, refusing to yield. Confusion swirled, a maddening vortex that left him questioning everything. Why was Blackwood so obsessed with harnessing the Echo's power? What drove him to such madness?. . Frustration gnawed at Orion's soul, trapped as he was, both physically and mentally. He was unable to escape, unable to comprehend the true nature of the Echo. Determination steeled him, a resolve born of desperation. He would keep the Echo's secret buried, no matter the cost.In the darkness, self-doubt crept in, a insidious whisper that eroded his confidence. Was he foolish to protect something he didn't fully understand? But Orion pushed the doubt aside, his heart hardened by the fire of his conviction.
As the machines whirred and Blackwood's threats loomed, resignation settled over him like a shroud. He would endure, for the Echo's sake, even if it meant his own destruction. In the silence, Orion whispered a promise to himself, a vow born of desperation and defiance: "I will not break. The Echo's secret is safe with me."
In that moment, Orion's emotions coalesced into a single, unyielding resolve. He would protect the Echo, no matter the cost, even if it meant sacrificing himself. The darkness closed in, but Orion's heart remained unbroken, a beacon of light in the void.
CHAPTER ONE
THE ECHO'S KEEPER
preѕenт day
Nicole bumped into Moose, Anne, and Andrew at the mall, and her face lit up with a bright smile. "Oh my gosh, it's been ages! How's everyone doing?"
Moose, always the jokester, replied, "We're doing great, Nicole. Just trying to survive without your drama."
Nicole playfully rolled her eyes. "Hey, my drama is what makes life interesting!"
Anne chuckled. "That's true. We've been pretty boring without you." Andrew added, "Yeah, we've had to resort to watching paint dry for entertainment."
Nicole laughed. "Well, I'm back now, so let's plan something exciting! How about a camping trip? We can spend a night under the stars, share some scary stories, and just enjoy each other's company."
Moose's face lit up. "Camping sounds awesome! I'm in."
Anne nodded. "Me too. It'll be great to spend some quality time together."
Andrew grinned. "As long as Nicole promises not to bring her drama."
Nicole pretended to be offended. "Hey, I'm a changed person! I promise to bring only s'mores and good vibes."
The group shared a laugh, and Nicole continued, "Seriously, it'll be great to catch up and make some new memories. Who's in?"
The others agreed, and they started making plans for their camping trip.
Nicole called out, "And don't forget, no phones allowed! We're going old-school, just like our friendship."
Moose joked, "Yeah, because nothing says 'old-school' like a bunch of adults sleeping in tents and eating bugs."
Nicole chuckled. "Hey, it'll be fun! And who knows, maybe we'll even discover some hidden talents... like Andrew's ability to start a fire without matches."
Andrew smirked. "Hey, that's a valuable skill. I'm like a modern day caveman."
As they finalized their camping plans, Moose asked, "Hey, what about Mike and Jenny? How are they doing?"
Nicole's face lit up with a smile. "They're doing great! Mike's still got his competitive streak, and Jenny's still got her creative spark. They're perfect for each other."
Anne nodded. "That's so sweet. We should invite them to join us!"
Nicole nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely! I'll make sure to bring them along. It won't be the same without them. We need to complete our circle!"
Andrew chuckled. "Yeah, and Mike can bring his famous 'I'm-the-best-at-everything' attitude to keep us entertained."
Moose laughed. "And Jenny can bring her art supplies to capture the beauty of nature... and our ugly faces."
Nicole playfully rolled her eyes. "Hey, we're not that ugly! But yes, let's make sure to bring Mike and Jenny along. It'll be just like old times."
The group shared a warm smile, excited to reunite and create new memories together. "I'll text Mike and Jenny now," Nicole said, pulling out her phone. "Let's make this camping trip one to remember!"
As Nicole sent the texts, the others continued to chat, their excitement building for the adventure ahead.Nicole frowned, staring at her phone. "Guys, I haven't heard back from Jenny. I'll try calling her to fill her in on the plans."
Moose nodded. "Yeah, make sure she knows what's up. We don't want her missing out."
Nicole dialed Jenny's number and waited for an answer. After a few rings, she hung up. "She's not picking up. I'll try reaching her again when she gets home." The group nodded, and Andrew spoke up, "So, where should we go for this camping trip? We need a place that's not too crowded, but still has some amenities."
Anne suggested, "What about somewhere near the Thames River? We could find a spot close to the warehouse district."
Moose liked the idea. "Yeah, that's not a bad spot. We can camp near the river and still be close to the city."
Andrew nodded thoughtfully. "I know a spot that might work. There's a small clearing near the old warehouse on Thames Street. It's secluded, but still has access to the river."
Nicole's eyes lit up. "That sounds perfect! Let's go check it out and see if it's suitable for camping."
The group agreed, and Moose added, "We can scope out the area and make sure it's safe and quiet enough for our trip."
Anne smiled. "I'm excited to get out of the city and spend some time in nature. This is going to be a great trip!"
Andrew suggested, "How about we plan to camp there on Thursday and Friday, and head back home on Saturday morning?"
The group nodded in agreement. Nicole said, "Sounds like a plan! Thursday to Saturday it is. I'll try to reach Jenny again and make sure she's in."
Moose grinned. "It's going to be a blast! Let's make sure to bring everything we need and make this a trip to remember."
As they finalized their plans, the group shared an excited smile, anticipating their upcoming adventure.
****************
Nicole settled into her couch, phone in hand, and dialed Jenny's number again. This time, Jenny picked up on the first ring.
"Hey, sleepyhead!" Nicole teased. "I've been trying to reach you all day."
Jenny yawned. "Hey, I was just taking a little nap. I missed your call."
Nicole chuckled. "A little nap? You were hibernating! I was starting to think you'd finally achieved your dream of becoming a bear."
Jenny laughed. "Hey, watch it! I'm just conserving energy for more important things... like partying with you guys."
Nicole grinned. "Speaking of which, guess who I ran into today?"
Jenny's curiosity was piqued. "Ooh, who?"
"Andrew, Anne, and Moose!" Nicole announced. "We're planning a camping trip for Thursday to Saturday."
Jenny squealed. "That sounds amazing! I'm so in. What made you guys decide on that?"
Nicole filled Jenny in on the details, including their decision to camp near the Thames River. Jenny listened excitedly, interrupting with jokes and witty remarks.
When Nicole finished, Jenny asked, "So, what's the plan? Are we going to rough it or glam-camp?"
Nicole laughed. "Definitely roughing it. We're talking tents, campfires, and bug spray."
Jenny pretended to be horrified. "Bug spray? You know I'm a city girl, right? I don't do bugs."
Nicole teased, "Come on, it'll be fun! You can't miss out on the opportunity to get eaten alive by mosquitoes."
Jenny chuckled. "You're the best, Nicole. I'll bring the wine and try to forget about the bugs."
As they continued to banter back and forth, Nicole smiled, happy to have shared the plans with her friend. She knew this camping trip was going to be an adventure to remember. As Jenny sat on her bed, her phone still clutched in her hand, a radiant smile spread across her face. She
couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement at the prospect of the camping trip. Just then, her elder sister Jade walked into the room, crunching into a crisp apple.
"Hey, what's got you grinning like a fool?" Jade asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Jenny's smile only grew wider. "Nicole just called me - we're going camping next weekend!"
Jade's eyebrows shot up. "Camping? That sounds like a blast! Who's going?"
Jenny's eyes sparkled. "The whole gang - Mike, Fletcher, Moose, Andrew and Sean!"
Jade's expression turned thoughtful. "Wait, isn't Anne Mike's ex?"
Jenny nodded, her smile faltering for a moment. "Yeah, she is."
Jade's eyebrows furrowed. "Do you think it's a good idea for Mike to be around her again? I mean, aren't they still pretty raw?"
Jenny sighed, her shoulders shrugging. "I don't know, Jade. But I have no choice - Nicole's already invited everyone, and Mike would kill me if I tried to back out now."
Jade's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Why don't you just go without telling him? You can always say you didn't want to hurt his feelings or something."
Jenny laughed, shaking her head. "You know I couldn't do that. Besides, Mike's not the type to get jealous or anything. He's over Anne."
Jade raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure about that? Guys can be pretty weird about their exes."
Jenny hesitated, a seed of doubt planted in her mind. Was Mike really over Anne? And what would happen when they saw each other?
