Jake walked through the streets of downtown Eastside City still in a knee brace but he no longer needed crutches. He couldn't help but think about Maeve. Ever since their intense session last week, she had been constantly on his mind. Her tough love approach and witty banter had struck a chord with him, and he found himself looking forward to their sessions more and more.
He reached the small cafe where he usually grabbed breakfast before heading to the rink. As he waited in line for his breakfast order to be completed, he noticed a group of young boys huddled together, staring at him with wide-eyed admiration.
One of them finally mustered up the courage to approach Jake. "Are you Jake Mercer?"
Jake smiled and nodded. "Yeah, that's me."
The group erupted into excited whispers as they recognized him as a player with the Eagles. The boy who had spoken stepped forward again. "Can we get a picture with you?"
"Sure thing," Jake said with a smile as he crouched down to be at their eye level.
After taking a few pictures with the boys, he headed back to his apartment, feeling grateful for all the support from his fans.
As he settled into his apartment, Jake’s thoughts couldn't help but drift back to Maeve. He replayed their interactions in his mind. He had always prided himself on being able to handle any situation with ease, but Maeve seemed to have a way of getting under his skin in a way no one else could. He found himself looking forward to their next session, wondering what kind of verbal sparring match they would engage in next.
Lost in thought, Jake didn't realize how much time had passed until his phone buzzed with a text from David, his teammate.
"Hey man, you coming out tonight?"
Jake hesitated before replying. As much as he enjoyed hanging out with the rest of the team, he also just wanted to chill at his apartment.
"Sorry man, not tonight. I'm beat. You and Gus are welcome to come over though, have a few beers. We can watch some movies or play Xbox"
There was a moment of silence before David replied.
“That sounds great. I didn’t really want to join the rest of the guys either. Let me text Gus.”
“See you guys at 8!”
Jake sighed in relief when David accepted his invitation. He didn't want to completely isolate himself from the team, but he also needed some alone time to process his emotions.
Jake decided to do some stretching exercises to help with his knee rehab. Maeve had given him a list of exercises to do at home, and he was determined to stick to her instructions.
As eight o’clock approached, he finished cleaning up his apartment and sat down on the couch to wait for David and Gus. He checked his phone and saw that he had a few missed texts from his mom and his manager.
He opened the messages from his mom first, knowing that she would probably be worried if he didn't respond soon. She had sent him a few pictures of their family vacation in Hawaii, along with a message saying how much she missed him and wished he could be there with them. Jake felt a pang of guilt as he realized how much time he had been spending on rehab and hockey, neglecting his family.
He quickly texted back, apologizing for not responding earlier and promising to call her tomorrow. Then, he turned to the message from his manager.
"Hey Jake, just wanted to touch base with you about some upcoming events. We have an interview scheduled for you next week with Sports Weekly magazine. They want to feature you as one of their rising stars in the NHL.”
Jake felt a surge of excitement at the news. Being recognized by a prestigious sports magazine was a big deal and it meant more exposure for him and potentially more endorsement deals. He quickly replied to confirm the interview details.
As he put his phone down, there was a knock at the door. Jake got up to let David and Gus in.
The three of them settled in on the couches with some beers as they caught up on each other's lives. Gus talked about his new baby daughter while David shared stories from their recent away games.
As they dug into their Chinese food, Jake couldn't help but feel grateful for these guys who had become like brothers to him over the years. They understood him in a way no one else did – they knew what it took to make it in professional hockey, they knew about the struggles of rehabilitating from an injury, and they knew how much pressure came with being in the spotlight.
They ended up playing a few rounds of FIFA on Xbox, laughing at each other's moves and trash-talking between goals until late into the night.
