The city lights shimmered below as Adrian and Elena remained on the rooftop, holding each other as though seven lost years had finally found their way home.
Neither of them spoke for a long while.
The silence was peaceful, carrying the weight of everything words had failed to express.
Eventually, Elena pulled back just enough to look at him.
“I still can’t believe it.”
Adrian smiled gently.
“Neither can I.”
She laughed softly, wiping away the last traces of tears from her cheeks.
“You’ve really been carrying that bus ticket around for seven years?”
He reached into his coat pocket and showed it to her once more.
“I’ve replaced wallets.”
“I’ve moved houses.”
“I’ve traveled to more countries than I can count.”
“But this…” He looked down at the faded ticket. “This always stayed with me.”
Elena shook her head with an amused smile.
“You know that’s a little crazy, right?”
“I’ve been told.”
Daniel’s voice suddenly echoed in Adrian’s memory.
“You’re either the most patient man alive… or the most stubborn.”
“I think Daniel would agree with you,” Adrian admitted.
She laughed, the sound warm enough to ease the heaviness that had settled over the past few days.
It was the first time Adrian had heard her laugh without uncertainty since Victoria had interfered.
He silently thanked God for it.
⸻
As they made their way downstairs, the elevator was quiet.
Elena leaned lightly against the mirrored wall, stealing occasional glances at Adrian.
He caught her looking and raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
She smiled.
“I’m trying to see if you’re real.”
“And?”
“I’m still deciding.”
He chuckled.
“Fair enough.”
When the elevator doors opened, they stepped into the executive hallway.
The office was almost empty. Only a few security guards and cleaners remained.
Adrian walked beside her instead of ahead of her.
He liked how natural it felt.
“So,” Elena said, breaking the silence, “what happens now?”
He looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“You spent seven years looking for me.”
“Now you’ve found me.”
She smiled teasingly.
“What’s your plan?”
He pretended to think carefully.
“I hadn’t planned beyond that.”
She laughed.
“You’ve got to be kidding.”
“I was too focused on finding you.”
She folded her arms.
“So the famous Adrian Blackwood, the man who plans billion-dollar business deals years in advance…”
“…forgot to plan what happens after finding the girl?”
He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
“When you say it like that…”
“It sounds ridiculous.”
“It is ridiculous.”
They both laughed.
Neither of them noticed the receptionist watching with wide eyes.
She had never seen the CEO smile this much.
⸻
The following morning, rumors spread through Blackwood Holdings faster than anyone expected.
“I heard Mr. Blackwood smiled yesterday.”
“No.”
“I heard he laughed.”
“Impossible.”
“They left the office together.”
“And he carried her bag.”
Employees whispered in elevators, hallways, and break rooms.
By lunchtime, the entire building seemed to know something had changed.
Unfortunately…
So did Victoria.
⸻
Victoria sat in her office staring at the photographs from the rooftop security camera.
One image showed Adrian gently brushing a tear from Elena’s cheek.
Another showed them embracing beneath the evening sky.
She placed the photographs on her desk one by one.
“So…”
“They chose each other.”
Her assistant stood quietly nearby.
“What should we do?”
Victoria remained silent for several moments before speaking.
“Call the board chairman.”
“The chairman?”
“Yes.”
“If Adrian wants to risk his reputation…”
“I’ll make sure the board questions his judgment.”
The assistant hesitated.
“But they haven’t officially announced a relationship.”
Victoria smiled coldly.
“They won’t need to.”
She tapped one of the photographs.
“Appearances can destroy a person long before facts ever do.”
⸻
Later that afternoon, Adrian was reviewing financial reports when his office phone rang.
“This is Adrian.”
“Mr. Blackwood,” his secretary said nervously.
“The board has requested an emergency meeting.”
His eyebrows knitted together.
“For what?”
“They didn’t say.”
“I’ll be there.”
As soon as he hung up, Daniel walked into the office without knocking.
“I’ve just heard.”
“You too?”
Daniel nodded grimly.
“The chairman received anonymous photographs.”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Victoria.”
“I’d bet my entire salary on it.”
Adrian stood and looked out the window.
“This is exactly what she wanted.”
Daniel folded his arms.
“What are you going to do?”
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he watched Elena through the glass wall of his office.
She was laughing with one of the junior employees while organizing files, completely unaware of the storm approaching.
Finally, he spoke.
“I’m not hiding anymore.”
Daniel smiled slightly.
“About time.”
⸻
That evening, Adrian asked Elena to join him in the conference room after everyone had gone home.
She entered carrying her notebook.
“You wanted to see me?”
He nodded.
“But not about work.”
She sat across from him.
“You look serious.”
“I am.”
He took a deep breath.
“I’ve spent too much of my life protecting people by keeping quiet.”
She reached across the table and gently rested her hand over his.
“You don’t have to do that anymore.”
He looked down at her hand before meeting her eyes.
“The board is going to hear rumors about us.”
“I know.”
“They may ask you questions.”
She smiled softly.
“I’m not afraid.”
“I’m afraid for you.”
She squeezed his hand reassuringly.
“I’ve spent my whole life believing kindness was never wasted.”
She smiled through the emotion in her voice.
“I’m not about to regret showing kindness to a lonely boy at a bus stop.”
Adrian felt his throat tighten.
“I don’t deserve you.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“You just needed someone to remind you that you were never alone.”
He smiled, a genuine smile that reached his eyes.
For the first time in years, hope outweighed fear.
But outside the conference room, hidden in the shadows of the hallway, someone quietly lowered a phone after recording their entire conversation.
A pair of red-painted fingernails tightened around the device.
Victoria.
She replayed the recording, a satisfied smile slowly spreading across her face.
“This is exactly what I needed.”
She slipped the phone into her handbag and walked toward the elevator.
Tomorrow morning, every member of the Blackwood Holdings board would receive an anonymous email.
By the end of the week, Adrian wouldn’t just be fighting for Elena’s love.
He would be fighting to keep everything he had built.
