CHAPTER TWENTY
---
The message from Victoria sat on Clifford's phone like a coiled snake, waiting to strike.
He read it over and over, his jaw tight, his mind racing. "You think you've won. But I still have one card left to play."
"What does she mean?" Maya asked, looking over his shoulder. She was still shaken from her ordeal, but there was steel in her voice now. Victoria had made a powerful enemy.
"I don't know," Clifford admitted. "But we need to find out before she does something else."
Marcus was already on it. His network was monitoring Victoria's movements, tracking her communications, watching for any sign of her next move. But Victoria had gone dark. No messages, no sightings, no activity. It was as if she'd vanished into thin air.
"She's planning something," Rachel said, her voice grim. "Something big. Something she thinks will destroy you once and for all."
"She's running out of options," Clifford said. "The patent is secure. Her reputation is destroyed. She's a fugitive. What else can she possibly do?"
"I don't know," Rachel said. "But we need to be ready."
---
The answer came three days later, in an email.
Clifford was in his office, going through his morning correspondence, when he saw it. The subject line was simple: "The Truth About Your Father."
His heart stopped.
He didn't have a father. Or rather, he'd never known his father. His mother had raised him and Maya alone, never speaking of the man who'd abandoned them. Clifford had asked about him once, when he was a child. His mother had looked away, her eyes filled with a pain he hadn't understood at the time.
"He's gone," she'd said. "And he's not coming back."
Clifford had never asked again.
But now, here was an email claiming to know the truth. He opened it, his hands trembling.
---
The email was long and detailed. It told the story of a young woman named Sarah, who'd fallen in love with a charismatic man named David. They'd been happy, for a while. But David had secrets—dark secrets that he'd kept hidden from Sarah.
"David was a member of the Alliance," the email read. "He was one of their most trusted operatives. And when he fell in love with your mother, he betrayed them. He tried to leave. He tried to build a normal life. But the Alliance doesn't let people go."
Clifford's breath caught in his throat.
"They killed him," the email continued. "They made it look like an accident. But your mother knew the truth. She knew who was responsible. And she spent the rest of her life trying to protect you from them."
Clifford sat back, his mind reeling. His father had been a member of the Alliance. His father had been killed by the Alliance. And his mother had known. She'd known all along.
"Your mother was a hero," the email said. "She sacrificed everything to keep you safe. And now, it's your turn to honor her legacy."
The email ended with a name and an address: "Eleanor Thorne. The old library. Tomorrow. Midnight."
---
Clifford didn't tell anyone about the email.
Not Maya. Not Rachel. Not Marcus. He couldn't. Not yet. He needed to know the truth first—the whole truth—before he shared it with anyone.
He spent the rest of the day in a daze, going through the motions of his work while his mind raced with questions. Who was Eleanor Thorne? What did she know about his father? And why had she waited until now to reach out?
That night, Clifford slipped out of his apartment and made his way to the old library on 5th Street.
The building was just as he remembered it—crumbling, abandoned, forgotten. He found the same side entrance he'd used before and slipped inside.
Eleanor Thorne was waiting for him in the same spot, her silver hair glowing in the moonlight.
"Mr. Masters," she said, her voice soft. "I was wondering when you'd come."
"You sent the email," Clifford said. "Why?"
"Because you deserve to know the truth," Eleanor said. "About your father. About your mother. About everything."
She gestured for him to sit. Clifford sat, his heart pounding.
"Your father was a brave man," Eleanor began. "He was a member of the Alliance, yes. But he was also a good man. He believed in the power of ideas, just like you do. And when he realized what the Alliance really was—what they were doing—he tried to stop them."
"What happened to him?" Clifford asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"He was killed," Eleanor said. "By the same people who are trying to destroy you now. Victoria Sterling's predecessors. They killed your father and made it look like an accident. But your mother knew the truth."
"She knew?" Clifford asked, his voice breaking. "She knew all along?"
"She did," Eleanor said. "And she spent the rest of her life protecting you from them. She moved constantly. She changed her name. She did everything she could to keep you safe."
Clifford felt tears streaming down his face. His mother—his quiet, gentle mother—had been a warrior. She'd fought for him, sacrificed for him, loved him more than he'd ever known.
"She was a hero," Eleanor said. "And so are you. You're carrying on her legacy. You're fighting the same fight she fought."
---
Clifford sat in silence for a long time, processing everything Eleanor had told him.
"Why now?" he asked finally. "Why tell me this now?"
"Because Victoria knows," Eleanor said. "She knows about your father. She knows about your mother. And she's planning to use that information to destroy you."
"How?"
"She's going to reveal the truth to the world," Eleanor said. "She's going to tell everyone that you're the son of a traitor. That your father was a member of the Alliance. That your mother was complicit in their crimes."
"That's not true," Clifford said. "My mother was a victim. My father was a hero."
"It doesn't matter what's true," Eleanor said. "It only matters what people believe. And Victoria is very good at making people believe what she wants them to believe."
Clifford's mind raced. Victoria was going to attack him through his parents. She was going to use their legacy to destroy him.
"What do I do?" he asked.
"You fight back," Eleanor said. "You tell the truth. You tell the world who your parents really were. And you don't let Victoria win."
---
The next morning, Clifford called a press conference.
He stood in front of the cameras, his heart pounding, his hands steady. He told them everything—about his father, about his mother, about the Alliance and their crimes. He told them about the sacrifices his parents had made, the love they'd shared, the legacy they'd left behind.
"My father was a hero," he said, his voice ringing with conviction. "My mother was a hero. And I'm proud to be their son."
The room was silent. Then, one by one, the journalists began to applaud.
---
The press conference went viral.
People rallied around Clifford, supporting him, believing in him. The story of his parents—their love, their sacrifice, their fight against the Alliance—touched hearts around the world.
Victoria's plan had backfired. Instead of destroying Clifford, she'd made him more popular than ever.
But Clifford knew she wasn't finished. She would never be finished. She would keep coming, keep fighting, keep trying to destroy him.
And he would keep fighting back. For his parents. For his sister. For everyone who believed in him.
For himself.
