Precisely a few days ago, Adam told Tabitha that he'd call her. But he hadn't even sent a text message. Tabitha didn't know whether she should be worried about him or just ignore her phone that Friday night.
She was slightly considering calling him, but then she let that thought go. Instead, she decided to check up on her family and to see what was going on with them. She wasn't going to waste her time thinking about him.
The Ubahs
Mommy: 2mr we're goin to do a video
call. So I'll no hw ur all doin
Her eyes twitched. She wasn't a fan of people who used short forms to write words, but she couldn't really say anything. She wouldn't be able to win the conversation anyway. Her dad wouldn't appreciate her correcting his wife.
Danny: You've said this before and
everyone's agreed. We know
the date.
Daddy: That's what you said last time
and you ended being the only
one who didn't show up.
Tabitha chuckled.
Danny: 😅 Sorry. I was busy, I told you.
Danny was her older brother who worked as a lawyer. A big shot lawyer of celebrities mostly, and politicians. She couldn't and wouldn't judge though, he should go get his bag. More for her anyway.
Daddy: Dera, what about you?
Chidera: Don't worry. Have I ever
missed a video call? Besides,
I haven't been busy these
days.
Chidera was the first born, and first girl in the family. She was crazy reserved and the fact that she even responded surprised Tabitha. Chidera barely responded to messages.
Daddy: Tabi?
Tabitha smiled. Her family, especially her parents were excited about her job and the place of work. They knew, but they wanted to know the details, and with what was going on, Tabitha didn't want to somehow slip. It'll be terrible.
Tabitha: I'll be there, daddy.
When she saw nothing from her mother, she knew that the woman had gone offline. No shock there. She wasn't a big fan of w******p. Why, when she could go straight to i********: and enjoy looking at pictures and videos of her favourite celebrities?
Daddy: Well, as beneficial as our
conversation was, I'd like
to continue reading my book.
Her dad was actually a surgeon, therefore, an avid reader, something in which he passed on to his children. That's why everyone's a reader, no matter how much they'd party. Everyone writes good English too, even in text messages. With the exception of his wife–she didn't care about writing in full words when you could just write in short form.
Daddy: Good night, everyone.
"Good night," Tabitha said aloud, going offline.
*****
Tabitha woke up on a Saturday morning by her phone ringing. From what she could see, it was still a bit dark out.
She was about to go back to sleep when her phone started ringing. Out of annoyance, she grabbed it and answered the call without checking the caller ID.
"Good morning."
The voice at the end of the call made her sit up in her bed.
"Adam?" She asked, wanting to be sure she wasn't dreaming.
"Yes," he said. "I'm sorry I didn't contact you since. I've been busy."
She hated how her heart reacted at his voice.
She forced a deadpanned tone. "It's okay."
"Is it?" he asked.
"Well... You missed classes, and I hope you have good reasons for that," she began. "You're no longer in highschool, but I wouldn't advice you to waste your parents money–"
"I didn't call for a lecture," Adam laughed. "But thanks for your concern."
Her gaze shifted from her sheets to her window. His laugh was so beautiful.
She stood up from her bed to look out, confirming her guess that people had barely woken up.
"So why did you call?"
She was careful not to let her curiosity slip into her voice.
"Would you like to go out today? Just the two of us, without Azuka interrupting."
Tabitha's breath hitched. Did she hear him properly?
"Hello?"
"Why do you want to go out?" she had to ask.
She heard him laugh softly. "Isn't that the first step into getting to know the person you like?"
She gasped. "Are you crazy?"
"Maybe," he answered honestly. "I bet it's the s*x. And that's why I want us to hang out just this once. To see where it'll take us."
"Like an experiment,” she said.
"Like an experiment," he concurred. "Mostly for me of course."
She couldn't believe that she was actually taking his words into consideration. She found him attractive- she'd never tell him that though- and still thought about that night sometimes, so his suggestion really wasn't a bad idea. Maybe she'd discover that he's a terrible person, with a shitty personality and all, just like other men, and move on with her life.
Then she remembered that he was her student.
"We still need to talk about that night, Adam. Rumours–"
"Agree to the date, then we'll talk."
Tabitha rolled her eyes in annoyance. This is what it feels like to be powerless. She couldn't really refuse. Her career… her reputation was in his f*****g hands and she couldn't just cuss him out.
"Whatever."
"I'll text you the place, though I'll pick you up, and everything else later," Adam said. "Enjoy the rest of your morning, Tabitha."
Before she could scold him for using her name without honorifics, he'd ended the call.
She sighed, still looking out the window. The day was clearer and the sun was peeping out the clouds. Sleep was far away from her now, and what was at the back of her mind was to tell her friends what had happened.
She did that in a few hours.
"No."
It was expected. Azuka would never let her get close to Adam for any reason if she had the chance. But she was in another state and couldn't do anything.
"This is good though," Tabitha tried to reason with her. "I wish attempting to get an NDA would be easy, but that would be dumb."
"If he wasn't the son of someone powerful, we would've found a way out of this," Azuka grumbled. "I've known Adam for years and though I doubt he'll do anything, you never know what goes on in people's minds." She sighed. "Life sucks."
"Yeah."
Also, the rules of the school carefully stated that 'No s****l or romantic relations between a staff and a student will be condoned if discovered, as it will lead to the staff's employment being terminated' and she'd supported it fully that time. Life was funny.
"We just need to come to an agreement."
Azuka spoke. "It just sounds like he's trying to take advantage of you. I don't like it, but I can't exactly threaten him because he has all the power."
She scanned through her wardrobe to find something suitable for her 'date'.
"Adam doesn't seem like a terrible person though. I don't exactly trust him fully, but I think he's alright."
Or he might prove her wrong later. He'd been nothing but nice and... respectful?.. and she'd appreciated that considering the situation. He never acted like they knew each other anymore than teacher-student relationship and she was grateful.
She had a good feeling about their 'date'.
"We're going to a restaurant by around ten, so I'm trying to prepare what to wear."
"But it's not even a real date, don't bother to dress up for him."
"Oh, come on. You know I always like to look good no matter what," Tabitha replied.
Azuka wasn't happy. "You better keep me updated after everything."
"Sure. And I'll make sure to be very careful, don't worry."
After that, Tabitha got busy. And soon, it was time for her "date” with Adam.
He'd gotten a ‘regular car's so as not to possibly be recognized and he didn't go outside to help her in the car.
The car windows were tinted and Tabitha loved that even more. Though… it was a lot of effort already.
"You're really beautiful," Adam let out when they settled into his car.
Tabitha cleared her throat, feeling awkward. She didn't expect that from him. He was really blunt.
"Thanks."
She wouldn't complain because she put in a lot of effort into her appearance, so a compliment was much appreciated. He looked really good. She was trying to see him a little boy though, a student that she was to take care of. Unfortunately, her attempts may be quite unsuccessful.
"I hope the place we're going to isn't too expensive," Tabitha said.
"Why?" Adam asked, glancing at her as he drove at medium speed. "It wouldn't make sense to take you somewhere cheap while you're looking so beautiful."
She stared at him. While she'd agree usually agree to that, but it was different now. "If you hadn't asked to go out, I would've rather we talked now and get it over with. But the main focus is you, so..."
"You know, I'm not going to tell anyone about us," Adam sighed, as if exhausted by the conversation. "Or about what happened. So you don't have to worry much."
She didn't say anything.
The silence continued for a while, but then he broke it.
"You don't believe me," he muttered.
"I just... I find it hard to believe that you haven't bragged to your friends and all," she admitted. "You don't really have anything to loose."
Adam nodded. "I've told you what I wanted. If nothing happens, I'll stop bothering you completely. I just want to satisfy my curiosity, honestly."
She didn't say anything again. She'd see where the evening would take them.
"Haven't you slept with many girls and suddenly felt something?" she asked when they stopped in front of a big and unfamiliar building. "It happens to almost everyone after sex."
At least, she thought so. She was probably wrong about that.
Adam responded. "The only girls I'd slept with were my girlfriends."
Tabitha became quiet again. Maybe dinner with him will make him give up and make her stop thinking how attractive she found him.
"French," she said aloud when she couldn't pronounce the restaurant's name.
"It's owned by a Cameroonian," Adam said. "The food is good though, so the name isn't too important."
She nodded. When he opened the car door for her–he was such a gentleman–she scanned her environment. There were expensive-looking cars parked and fancy-dressed people going in and out. It seemed the place was popular amongst the rich because it was miles away from her apartment and average neighborhood.
"Would you like to go in?"
"Of course," she said, trying her best to discreetly look around her. She tried not to feel out of place as she took his offered arm.
"So... This is expensive."
They were given a private room where they would be served their food, and there was an intercom to call waiters. Tabitha didn't know whether to call Adam sweet or crazy. She bet it all costs lots of money.
Adam grinned. "I never said it wasn't."
"Really expensive."
"Yes, I'm aware," he agreed.
She wondered what else he did apart from music to get such money to pay for this place because she knew that he was the only chi- oh. An only child. Damn, she forgot about that. No wonder.
"I can afford it," he assured her. "I have a job. And I get an allowance from my parents too."
"Okay," she said. She got allowances from her parents too sometimes so it was fair. She started calculating how much that was in her account because she'd heard stories of men running away when it came to paying. And while it'd never happened to her, nor anyone close to her, she was still on alert. "I guess I'll pick what I like."
"Go ahead."
The food had no price tag. Okay.
..
The food, when it arrived was delicious and Tabitha tried her best not to lick the plate. And it took a while for her to listen properly to Adam talk. His company was wonderful. So wonderful that Tabitha realized that it wouldn't be easy to not like him like she'd intended.
