Emily hadn't expected to be so distracted by Alexander Blackwood. His words lingered in the back of her mind as she continued managing the evening's events, her mind doing its best to push him away. She wasn't here for distractions. She wasn't here for billionaire playboys. She was here to succeed, to prove her worth. But there was something about him that refused to let her go. She moved through the crowd, checking on staff, ensuring the hors d'oeuvres were refilled, and making sure the music remained at the perfect volume. But everywhere she went, she could feel his eyes on her, like an invisible thread connecting them. Her pulse quickened every time she thought about him, every time she felt his gaze. And that wasn't supposed to happen. She's supposed to be the one in control tonight, not him. A soft buzz in her ear brought her back to reality. "Emily, we're ready for the speech." "Coming right up," she responded into the earpiece The evening had been flawless up until now elegant, effortless. All that was left was the speech from the event's host, and she'd made sure everything was in perfect shape for the final moments. But no matter how much she told herself to focus on the task at hand, all she could think of was Alexander Blackwood, his cold grey eyes, seductive demeanor, and the tension that had hung between them in that brief moment. She stood at the back of the room, watching as the host took the stage. The audience quieted, and the spotlight shifted. The sound of Alexander's voice in the crowd snapped her attention back, but this time it wasn't just his gaze it was the way his presence always seemed to fill the room. As the host gave a speech about the success of the event and the future of the venue, Emily found herself stealing glances at Alexander. He wasn't paying attention to the speech. Instead, he was surveying the room, his sharp gaze sweeping over the guests. It was as if he was measuring the success of the evening with the precision of a man who never let his guard down. Just as Emily turned back to check on the staff, she felt a light tap on her shoulder. She turned, expecting one of her team, but instead, it was him. Alexander. "Miss Carter," he said smoothly, his voice like velvet. "I was wondering if you could spare a minute, we never really finished our conversation." Her heart skipped a beat. She swallowed, trying to maintain composure. "I don't think now is the right time Mr. Blackwood" His expression remained impassive, but there was something almost predatory in the way he studied her. "That's alright, we can talk after your speech. Break a leg." Emily's instincts screamed at her to decline, to maintain her distance. But something in his eyes kept her rooted to the spot. "I… I can step aside for a few minutes," she said, though the words felt foreign on her tongue. They walked to a quieter corner of the rooftop, the hum of the party fading as they entered the secluded area. Emily tried to steady her nerves, reminding herself that she was in control. She was the expert here. She wasn't some naïve woman, taken in by a handsome face and an intimidating reputation. But Alexander Blackwood was no ordinary man. "I have to admit," he began, his voice low, "I wasn't expecting someone like you." Emily raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by someone like me?" "You clearly understand the art of control, and I have to say, what you created tonight is nothing short of exceptional," he said, his gaze steady and unwavering. She blinked, a little caught off guard by the compliment. "Thank you," she said, trying to keep her voice even. "I take pride in my work." Alexander nodded slightly. "I can tell. Most people in your position would have crumbled under the pressure. But you didn't." There was something in his voice, something that felt like an assessment, not just a statement. He was measuring her, deciding if she was worth his time, and his interest. "I'm not most people," she said, meeting his gaze head-on, her heart pounding in her chest. For a moment, the air between them was thick with tension. Neither of them moved, both of them standing their ground. It was as if the world around them had stopped, leaving only the two of them in the quiet of the night. Finally, Alexander spoke again, his voice softer. "You're not." He stepped closer to her, his presence overwhelming. She fought the instinct to back away, to create some distance between them, but she couldn't. There was something magnetic about him, something that pulled her in and made her forget the rules she'd always lived by. "You have not given me a reply to my proposition" Before she could say anything else, a voice called out from across the rooftop, and the moment shattered. Emily broke eye contact with him, taking a step back as she looked toward the sound. A guest was calling her, and her job was calling her back to reality. "I'll need to check on the final details," Emily said quickly, her voice almost breathless as she moved away from him. Alexander didn't stop her, didn't make any attempt to hold her back. But she could feel his gaze follow her once again as she walked away. And this time, it wasn't just his presence that lingered it was the weight of his words, the feel of his touch
