Maya's return changed the atmosphere at school before she had even walked through the main gate.
By eight o'clock, everyone seemed to know she was back.
Zara stood beside Amie near the classroom window, watching students gather outside.
“She really came back early,” Amie said quietly.
Zara nodded.
Neither of them had forgotten what happened the previous day.
The photograph.
The missing money.
The person leaving the fundraiser room.
And now Maya was back.
“Do you think she knows?” Zara asked.
“Knows what?”
“That we have the photograph.”
Amie looked at her.
“I don't know.”
Before Zara could respond, the classroom door opened.
Maya walked in.
The room became unusually quiet.
She looked around as though she expected everyone to stare, but she didn't react. Her eyes moved across the classroom until they stopped on Zara.
Then they moved to Amie.
Maya's expression changed.
She knew.
Zara could feel it.
Maya walked straight toward them.
“Can I talk to you?”
Amie looked at Zara.
“Both of you,” Maya added.
They followed her into the hallway.
Maya stopped near the staircase.
“I know about the photograph.”
Zara folded her arms.
“How?”
“Because I gave it to someone.”
“To who?”
Maya hesitated.
“That doesn't matter.”
“It matters to me,” Zara replied.
Maya looked at her for a long moment.
“You shouldn't have gotten involved.”
“I didn't choose to.”
“I know.”
“Then why did someone leave warnings for me?”
Maya's eyes dropped.
“Because whoever is behind this is afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“The truth.”
Zara waited.
Maya took a breath.
“The night the money disappeared, I saw someone enter the fundraiser room after Jayden left.”
Amie stepped forward.
“Who?”
Maya looked around before answering.
“I wasn't completely sure at first.”
“But now you are?” Zara asked.
“Yes.”
“Who was it?”
Maya's expression became tense.
“I'll tell you when I know it's safe.”
Zara frowned.
“You've been saying things like that since yesterday.”
“I know.”
“Then give us something useful.”
Maya looked at Amie.
“Did you show her the second photograph?”
Amie's face went pale.
Zara turned toward her.
“Second photograph?”
Amie swallowed.
“I didn't think it was safe.”
“What second photograph?”
Amie slowly reached into her bag.
Before she could take anything out, footsteps came from the end of the hallway.
Jayden appeared.
His eyes immediately went to Maya.
“What are you doing here?”
Maya crossed her arms.
“I go to this school too.”
“You weren't supposed to return until next week.”
“I changed my mind.”
Jayden looked at Zara.
“Did she tell you anything?”
“Not enough.”
Maya sighed.
“You can't keep protecting everyone, Jayden.”
“And you can't keep making things worse.”
Their argument quickly drew attention.
A few students began slowing down to watch.
Zara stepped between them.
“Can we please not do this in the hallway?”
Jayden nodded.
Maya looked away.
They moved into an empty classroom.
Maya closed the door.
“I'll tell you what I know,” she said.
Everyone became silent.
“The fundraiser money wasn't stolen by one person.”
Zara frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“There were two people involved.”
Amie looked shocked.
“Two?”
Maya nodded.
“One person took the money. The other person helped cover it up.”
Jayden's expression remained unreadable.
“Who?”
Maya looked directly at him.
“I don't know the first person's identity for certain.”
“But you know the second?”
“Yes.”
Zara's heart began beating faster.
“Who?”
Maya hesitated.
Then she said,
“Mr. Daniels.”
Everyone froze.
Mr. Daniels was one of the school's administrative officers.
Zara couldn't believe it.
“You're saying a staff member helped cover up the theft?”
“I think so.”
“You think?”
“I saw him speaking to someone that night. I couldn't hear their conversation, but afterward he went into the office and changed something on the fundraiser records.”
Jayden shook his head.
“That doesn't prove anything.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you telling us?”
“Because I found this.”
Maya pulled a small flash drive from her pocket.
Zara stared at it.
“What is that?”
“Copies of the original fundraiser records.”
Amie stepped closer.
“Where did you get them?”
“I made copies before the records were changed.”
Jayden took a step forward.
“Give it to me.”
Maya immediately pulled it back.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because every time you try to handle this yourself, someone gets dragged into it.”
Jayden looked frustrated.
“So what do you want to do?”
“Find the truth without letting anyone know we're looking.”
Zara looked at the flash drive.
For the first time, they had something real.
Not rumors.
Not warnings.
Evidence.
But before anyone could make a plan, the classroom door opened.
Mr. Daniels stood outside.
Everyone went silent.
His eyes moved from Maya to Jayden, then to Zara and Amie.
“What are you all doing here?”
Nobody answered.
His gaze stopped on Maya.
“You weren't expected back until next week.”
“I know.”
He stared at her for several seconds.
Then his eyes moved toward the flash drive in her hand.
His expression changed.
Only for a moment.
But Zara noticed.
He turned away.
“Come to my office after lunch, Maya.”
Then he walked away.
Maya waited until his footsteps disappeared.
“He knows,” she whispered.
Zara looked at her.
“How?”
Maya shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Jayden looked toward the hallway.
“We need to leave.”
They quietly walked out of the classroom.
But Zara stayed behind for a second.
Something had caught her attention.
On the floor near the doorway was a small piece of paper.
She picked it up.
There was only one sentence written on it.
You are looking in the wrong place.
Zara's stomach tightened.
She turned toward the hallway.
Mr. Daniels was already gone.
And suddenly, Zara wasn't sure if the school mystery was about missing money anymore.
Maybe the money had only been the beginning.
