The Truth Behind The Pendant

1177 Words
“You’re not just the last Valdez heir.” The man paused. “You are the reason your family was destroyed.” Elena stared at him, unable to understand his words. “What does that mean?” The man slowly stepped closer. “Ask your mother.” Elena turned to Maria. “Mom?” Maria’s face had gone pale. “Don’t listen to him.” “Then tell me the truth!” Elena’s voice shook. “Why does everyone keep saying I’m the reason my family was destroyed?” Maria opened her mouth, but no words came out. Dante stepped beside Elena. “Maria, she deserves to know.” Maria looked at him with anger. “You promised.” “I promised to protect her. I never promised to let her live a lie forever.” The stranger chuckled. “How touching.” Dante immediately pointed his gun at him. “Enough games. Who are you?” The man smiled. “Victor.” Elena’s eyes widened. “Victor Romano?” Dante’s jaw tightened. “You shouldn’t have come here.” Victor ignored him. Instead, he looked at Elena’s black rose pendant. “That necklace belonged to your father.” Elena instinctively covered it. “He gave it to me.” “No,” Victor replied. “He gave it to your mother. She gave it to you years later.” Maria looked down. “That’s true.” Elena’s heart raced. “Why is it so important?” Victor’s smile faded. “Because it contains the key to everything.” Dante stepped forward. “What key?” Victor laughed. “You really don’t know?” Before he could say more, Maria suddenly grabbed Elena’s hand. “We have to go.” Victor raised his gun. “No one is going anywhere.” Dante moved in front of them. “Then you'll have to get through me.” Victor’s men immediately raised their weapons. Elena looked around the room. There were at least six armed men. Dante couldn't fight all of them. She suddenly remembered the golden key in his possession. “Dante.” He looked at her. “The key.” His expression changed. “What about it?” “The black box.” Dante understood immediately. He reached into his pocket. Victor’s face changed when he saw the golden key. “You have it.” Dante held it tightly. “Yes.” Victor pointed his gun directly at him. “Give it to me.” “No.” “Dante, don't.” Elena grabbed his arm. Victor’s eyes narrowed. “You have no idea what that key opens.” Elena looked at him. “Then tell me.” Victor smiled. “It opens the room where your father kept the evidence against the people who betrayed him.” Maria closed her eyes. Elena stared at her. “You knew?” Maria nodded slowly. “Your father discovered a plan to destroy both the Valdez and Romano families.” “Who made the plan?” Maria looked at Victor. “He did.” Victor’s expression hardened. “Lies.” “You wanted control of both families,” Maria continued. “Your father refused to cooperate with you.” Victor raised his gun. “Enough!” Dante fired first. The bullet struck Victor’s gun, sending it flying from his hand. Chaos erupted. The guards opened fire. Dante pulled Elena behind a marble pillar while Maria crouched beside them. “Stay down!” Dante shouted. Elena’s heart pounded as bullets struck the walls. “We need to get out!” Dante nodded. “Follow me.” He grabbed Elena’s hand and led her toward a narrow hallway. Maria followed behind them. They ran until they reached an old wooden door. Dante kicked it open. Inside was a small room filled with shelves and dusty boxes. Elena looked around. “What is this?” Maria walked toward the far wall. “Your father’s private study.” Elena slowly stepped inside. She had never been here before. Yet the room felt strangely familiar. There was an old desk near the window. On top of it sat a small black box. Elena’s breath caught. “That box…” Dante placed the golden key into the lock. Click. The box opened. Inside was an old photograph, several documents, and a folded letter. Elena picked up the photograph. It showed her father standing with Maria. But there was another person beside them. A young Dante. Elena looked at him. “You were here.” Dante nodded. “Your father trusted me.” She opened the letter. Her father’s handwriting filled the page. Elena, if you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally found you. Her hands trembled. There is one thing you must understand. You were never the cause of our family’s destruction. Elena stopped breathing. She continued reading. You were the reason I fought. Tears filled her eyes. The people who wanted me dead believed that destroying you would erase my bloodline. They were wrong. Elena looked at Maria. “Why didn't you show me this?” Maria began crying. “Because your father made me promise to keep you hidden until you were old enough to protect yourself.” Elena looked at Dante. “Did you know about this letter?” “No.” “Then why did you protect me all these years?” Dante stepped closer. “Because your father saved my life.” Elena stared at him. “He told me that one day, you would need someone who would choose you over the family.” A gunshot suddenly shattered the window. Dante pulled Elena down. Maria screamed. Victor’s voice echoed from outside. “You found the letter.” Dante looked toward the broken window. Victor stood in the garden with several armed men. “And now,” Victor shouted, “you finally know why I need Elena alive.” Elena clutched the letter. “Why?” Victor smiled. “Because your blood is the only thing that can open what your father left behind.” Dante looked at Elena. “What did he mean?” Elena slowly touched the black rose pendant. For the first time, she noticed something she had never seen before—a tiny symbol engraved on its back. A symbol identical to the one on the golden key. Her eyes widened. “The pendant…” Dante stared at it. “It’s not just a necklace.” Maria whispered the words Elena had feared. “It’s the other half of the key.” Outside, Victor raised his gun. “Bring me Elena!” Dante tightened his grip on his weapon. “No one is taking her.” Elena looked at him. For the first time, she wasn't afraid. She closed her hand around the pendant. “If they want me…” She looked toward the door. “Let them come.” Because now, Elena knew one thing for certain. She wasn't running from her family's past anymore. She was ready to uncover it.
