The Man Who Should Be Dead

997 Words
Elena couldn't breathe. The world around her seemed to disappear. Gunfire. Shouting. Explosions. Everything faded into distant noise as she stared at the man standing beyond the shattered gates. Her uncle. The man her father had mourned. The man everyone believed had died years ago. Yet there he was. Alive. Smiling. Watching her. "Hello, niece." The words echoed inside her head like a curse. "No..." Elena shook her head. "No, you're dead." The man's smile widened. "Clearly not." Dante stepped in front of her immediately, placing himself between Elena and the stranger. His gun remained raised. Every Romano guard around them did the same. The atmosphere became suffocating. Dangerous. One wrong move would start another m******e. The man glanced at Dante and chuckled. "Still protecting her, I see." Dante's eyes hardened. "What do you want, Adrian?" Elena froze. Adrian. That was his name. Adrian Valdez. Her father's older brother. The ghost who had suddenly returned from the dead. Adrian spread his arms casually. "What kind of welcome is this?" "You brought armed men to our gates." "I brought protection." Dante laughed coldly. "Don't insult my intelligence." For a brief second, Adrian's smile vanished. The warmth disappeared from his eyes. What remained was something far more dangerous. Hatred. Ancient hatred. The kind that survived decades. "I didn't come here to fight," Adrian said quietly. "I came for Elena." Every guard immediately tightened their grip on their weapons. Elena felt her pulse quicken. "Why?" Adrian looked directly at her. "Because your father failed." The words struck like a slap. Dante stepped forward. "Watch your mouth." "Or what?" Adrian asked. The tension exploded. For a moment, Elena thought Dante would shoot him. Instead, Maria suddenly moved between them. "Enough!" Everyone turned toward her. Her face had gone pale. Terrified. As if seeing Adrian again had awakened a nightmare she thought was buried forever. "Maria," Adrian said softly. She flinched. The reaction didn't escape Elena. Something wasn't right. Something much bigger was happening. "You should have stayed dead," Maria whispered. Adrian laughed. "Many people tried to make that happen." Elena stared at them. "You know him." Maria closed her eyes. For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then Adrian answered instead. "We all knew each other." Elena frowned. "What does that mean?" "It means your father lied to you." The statement hit harder than any bullet. "No." "He did." "My father never lied." Adrian's expression softened unexpectedly. For the first time, Elena saw sadness in his eyes. "That's what I used to think too." Silence followed. Heavy. Uncomfortable. Dangerous. Then Adrian reached inside his coat. Instantly dozens of guns aimed at him. "Don't move!" Dante barked. Adrian ignored the warning. Slowly, he pulled out an old photograph. Then he tossed it onto the ground. The picture slid across the marble floor. Stopping directly at Elena's feet. She bent down and picked it up. The moment she saw it, her blood turned cold. The photograph showed four people. Her father. Maria. A younger Dante's father. And Adrian. All standing together. All smiling. Like a family. Elena looked up in disbelief. "You worked together?" "We founded it together," Adrian said. Her heart stopped. Founded what? The question burned inside her. But before she could ask, Adrian spoke again. "The Order of the Black Rose." The room fell silent. Every single person froze. Even Dante looked shocked. Elena remembered the symbol. The black rose pendant. The organization responsible for her father's death. The people hunting her. The enemies hiding in the shadows. "No." Her voice barely came out. "You're lying." "I wish I was." Maria suddenly looked away. Unable to meet Elena's eyes. That alone told her everything. The truth. At least part of it. Her father had been connected to the very organization that destroyed their family. The revelation shattered something inside her. "Why?" she whispered. Nobody answered. Tears burned behind her eyes. Every answer she found only created more questions. Everything she believed was crumbling. Adrian took a step forward. The guards immediately raised their weapons again. "I didn't come to hurt you, Elena." "Then why are you here?" "To save you." Dante scoffed. "From what?" Adrian's gaze shifted toward him. "From the people standing beside her." The accusation struck like lightning. Elena's head snapped toward Dante. Then Maria. Neither spoke. Neither denied it. Fear crawled through her chest. For the first time since arriving at the mansion, she didn't know who to trust. Her uncle. Dante. Maria. Every person seemed to be hiding secrets. Suddenly, Adrian's expression changed. The confidence vanished. Replaced by alarm. A distant engine roared from somewhere beyond the trees. Adrian looked toward the forest. Then he cursed. A single word. One Elena had never heard him say before. "They found us." Dante immediately noticed the change. "Who found us?" Adrian's face turned deadly serious. "The real enemy." Before anyone could respond, a deafening explosion erupted beyond the gates. The ground trembled violently. Several vehicles were thrown into the air. Screams echoed through the darkness. Then another explosion followed. And another. The night sky turned orange with flames. Elena stared in horror. "What is happening?" Adrian looked directly at her. For the first time since his arrival, genuine fear appeared in his eyes. "They have the other half." Elena's breath caught. The other half? Her gaze immediately dropped toward the golden key hanging around her neck. Then toward the silver fragment in Dante's hand. A terrible realization formed. There wasn't just one key. There was another piece. Another player. Another secret. And whoever possessed it was finally making their move. Then a voice echoed from the darkness. Cold. Calm. Terrifying. "Thank you for gathering everyone in one place." The voice didn't belong to Adrian. It didn't belong to Dante. And it certainly didn't belong to anyone Elena knew. A figure emerged from the burning shadows. Wearing a black rose mask. Holding a golden key fragment. The final piece. And behind him stood dozens of armed soldiers. The masked man smiled.
