The Final Piece

1000 Words
The game ends tonight. The words echoed across the burning estate. Elena felt every muscle in her body lock. The masked man stood beyond the flames, holding the golden key fragment high enough for everyone to see. The final piece. The missing half. The object her father had died protecting. The object countless people had killed for. And now it was finally here. Dante moved closer to Elena. Instinctively. Protectively. His arm brushed against hers. A small gesture. Yet somehow it made her feel less alone. The masked man chuckled. "You look disappointed, Adrian." Adrian's expression darkened. "You." "So you remember me." The man's voice remained calm. Almost amused. As if the chaos surrounding them was merely entertainment. The burning vehicles. The wounded guards. The bodies scattered across the grounds. None of it seemed to affect him. "Who is he?" Elena demanded. Nobody answered immediately. Then Maria whispered a name. A name that seemed to drain all color from her face. "Lucien." The masked man bowed theatrically. "At your service." Elena frowned. The name meant nothing to her. But judging by everyone's reaction, it meant everything to them. Dante tightened his grip on his weapon. "I thought you were dead." Lucien laughed. "A lot of people thought that." The similarity between his answer and Adrian's was impossible to ignore. Elena suddenly realized something. These men shared a history. A dangerous one. A deadly one. "What do you want?" she asked. Lucien's gaze settled on her. For a moment, she felt exposed. Like he could see every fear she was trying to hide. "You." Her stomach twisted. "What?" "The key belongs to you." The statement stunned everyone. Even Adrian looked surprised. Lucien slowly pointed toward the pendant hanging around Elena's neck. "The bloodline chooses the keeper." Elena instinctively grabbed the pendant. "You know nothing about my family." Lucien's eyes softened unexpectedly. "Oh, Elena." The way he said her name sent chills down her spine. "I know more about your family than you do." Silence followed. Then Lucien removed his gloves. On his right hand was a scar. A familiar scar. Elena's eyes widened. She had seen it before. Years ago. In an old family photograph. Standing beside her father. Standing beside Adrian. Standing beside everyone. Her heart stopped. "No." Lucien smiled. Recognition. That was what he had wanted. "What is it?" Dante asked. Elena couldn't answer. Her voice refused to work. Because the truth was impossible. The man before her had once been part of her father's inner circle. One of his most trusted allies. One of the founders. One of the people who had vanished before everything collapsed. "You knew my father." Lucien nodded. "We were brothers." The revelation struck like lightning. Not by blood. But by loyalty. By secrets. By power. Everything suddenly felt connected. Every lie. Every betrayal. Every death. They all led back to the same group. The Black Rose Order. "The Order was never supposed to become this," Lucien said quietly. "It was supposed to protect something." Adrian laughed bitterly. "And look how that turned out." Lucien's eyes hardened. "Your greed destroyed it." "My greed?" Adrian snapped. "You betrayed us first." The argument exploded instantly. Years of hatred poured into every word. Every accusation. Every secret. Elena listened in stunned silence. The men weren't merely enemies. They had once been family. Friends. Partners. Now they wanted each other dead. Suddenly, another memory surfaced. The letter. The message written in her father's handwriting. Trust only those willing to sacrifice everything for you. Her chest tightened. Who was that supposed to be? Adrian? Maria? Dante? She didn't know anymore. Then gunfire erupted. A sniper shot rang through the night. Everything happened at once. Lucien's men opened fire. The Romano guards returned fire. Chaos consumed the estate. Again. Dante immediately grabbed Elena and pulled her behind a stone pillar. Bullets struck the marble around them. Fragments exploded through the air. "Stay down!" he shouted. Elena nodded. Her heart pounded violently. Nearby, Adrian was firing at approaching soldiers. Maria was helping wounded guards reach cover. The entire estate had become a battlefield. Then Elena heard a cry. A familiar cry. She turned. Maria. Blood stained her shoulder. Maria collapsed to one knee. "Maria!" Elena rushed forward before anyone could stop her. "No!" Dante shouted. Too late. Another shot echoed. Elena froze. A sharp pain exploded through her side. The force knocked the air from her lungs. Everything slowed. The world tilted. Then she hit the ground. Distant voices echoed around her. Someone was screaming her name. Dante. It was Dante. She felt his arms catch her. Felt his hands pressing against the wound. Trying to stop the bleeding. His face appeared above her. For the first time since she met him, she saw pure panic in his eyes. "Stay with me." Blood coated his hands. Her blood. "Dante..." "Don't talk." His voice cracked. The sound shocked her. Because Dante Romano never sounded afraid. Not until now. Another explosion rocked the estate. But neither of them looked away. The world seemed to disappear around them. Leaving only the two of them. For a brief moment, Elena forgot the war. Forgot the key. Forgot the betrayal. All she saw was him. And all he saw was her. Then Dante did something completely unexpected. He lowered his forehead against hers. His voice became a whisper. Raw. Broken. Terrified.. . "I can't lose you." Elena's breath caught. Every emotion she had been fighting suddenly surfaced. The fear. The confusion. The feelings she never wanted to admit. "Dante..." A shadow appeared behind him. Neither noticed. Not until it was too late. A gun clicked. The sound echoed through the battlefield. Cold. Deadly. Final. Dante slowly looked up. His eyes widened. Standing behind him was Lucien. Holding a pistol against Dante's head. Lucien smiled. Then he looked directly at Elena. And delivered the words that shattered her world. "Ask him who really killed your father." The battlefield fell silent. And Dante's expression gave her the answer.
