Chapter 14: The Architecture of Scars

1121 Words
The storm outside had calmed down. It wasn’t loud anymore—just soft rain tapping against the windows like someone quietly crying. Inside Adrian’s room, everything felt still. The fire in the fireplace was almost out, its faint glow spreading warm orange light across the walls. The room smelled faintly of medicine… and something heavier. Silence. The kind that comes after something bad almost happens. Adrian sat on the edge of his bed, his back slightly bent. His black shirt hung loose, barely covering him. The fresh bandage on his back stood out against his skin—clean, white, but surrounded by old scars that told stories no one had heard. Right now, he doesn’t look like a powerful man. He looked… tired. Like someone who had been carrying too much for too long. Lily stood near the basin, quietly soaking a cloth in warm water. The sound of water dripping felt louder than it should have in such silence. “You should rest,” she said softly. Adrian didn’t move. “Rest is for people who can forget things.” His voice was low. Dry. Lily looked at him for a moment, then slowly walked closer. She knelt in front of him, carefully starting to clean the dried blood near his bandage. Her touch was gentle. Too gentle for someone who had come here with a mission. As her fingers brushed his skin, she felt it—his body wasn’t shaking from pain. It was tension. Like he was holding himself together with force. Her eyes moved over his back… and she froze for a second. There were so many scars. Old ones. Deep ones. Some thin, some jagged. This wasn’t just one fight. This was years of survival. Suddenly, Adrian’s hand moved. He caught her wrist. Not hard. But firm enough to stop her. “Do you know how I got the one on my chest?” he asked. Lily’s breath slowed. She shook her head. “No…” His eyes met hers. For a moment, he didn’t look like Adrian—the feared man everyone talked about. He looked younger. Like someone who hadn’t healed. “I was sixteen,” he said quietly. “Someone close to my family betrayed us.” Lily didn’t move. She didn’t even blink. “He helped raise me,” Adrian continued. “I trusted him. He sold us… just for money and power.” His jaw tightened slightly. “They didn’t just come to kill us. They wanted to send a message.” His thumb brushed lightly over her wrist, almost unconsciously. “He held the knife himself. Looked me in the eyes and said… trusting people is a weakness.” Lily felt something cold run through her. Because right now… She was exactly that kind of person. A lie. A danger. A hidden knife. “What happened to him?” she asked, barely beyond a whisper. Adrian’s face went blank again. “I killed him.” Just like that. No emotion. No regret. Silence filled the room again. “That’s why I don’t let people in,” he added. “Every time I did… they tried to destroy me.” He leaned closer to her. Too close. “And then you came into my life,” he said, his voice softer now but heavier. “You’re different. I don’t understand you.” Lily’s heart started beating faster. “You make me forget things I shouldn’t forget.” For a second, she couldn’t think. This was it. This was the opening. The weakness she was supposed to use. Everything inside her told her—this is your chance. But when she looked at him… She didn’t see a target. She saw someone broken. Someone real. Slowly, she lifted her hand and placed it on his cheek. It wasn’t planned. It just… happened. “Not everyone wants to hurt you,” she whispered. She didn’t even know if that was the truth… or a lie. Because she was here to hurt him. But right now… She didn’t want to. Adrian closed his eyes for a brief second, leaning into her touch. Just a little. Just enough to show he needed it. “If I’m wrong about you…” he murmured, “then it will be the last mistake I make.” His hands moved to her shoulders, pulling her closer. Their foreheads touched. Their breaths mixed. Everything felt quiet. Too quiet. Like the world had stopped just for them. Lily’s chest tightened. She could feel his heartbeat. Strong. Real. He’s just a man… That thought scared her more than anything. Because it made everything harder. She pulled back slightly, her lips barely a breath away from his. “Adrian, I—” She wanted to say it. Not the truth about who she was. But something else. Something softer. Something dangerous. But before she could— Clock. The sound echoed through the hallway. Sharp. Cold. Real. The moment broke. Adrian stepped back immediately, his expression changing like a switch had flipped. The warmth disappeared. The walls were back. “Go to sleep, Lily,” he said, calm again. Distant. “Morning won’t be this kind.” Lily stood there for a second… then nodded. She walked to the door slowly, her body feeling heavier than before. Before leaving, she turned back. He was already looking away. Back to being the man everyone feared. Not the one she had just seen. She stepped out and closed the door quietly. The hallway felt colder. She leaned against the wall, her hands shaking. This wasn’t fear of a mission. This was something else. Something worse. She took a deep breath. And that’s when she realized it. Her biggest weapon wasn’t her training. It wasn’t her plan. It was this… She was starting to care. And that changed everything. Because now— She wasn’t just aiming for his empire anymore. She was aiming for his heart. And if she succeeded… She didn’t know who would break first. Inside the room, Adrian sat still for a long time after she left. Then slowly… he stood up. Walked to the window. And pressed a hidden button beneath the frame. A soft click. Somewhere in the shadows, a voice came through a hidden speaker— “Sir?” Adrian’s eyes darkened. “Keep an eye on Lily,” he said quietly. A pause. “Something about her… doesn’t feel innocent.” Another pause. “And if I’m right…” His voice dropped, colder than before. “Don’t stop her.” Silence. Then— “I want to see what she’s really here for.” Outside the door, just a few steps away… Lily stood frozen. Because she had heard everything.
