Chapter 12: The Fragility of a Shadow

The Volkov estate library felt too big at night. The tall shelves, filled with old books, stretched up like silent walls. The smell of paper and wood hung in the air, mixed with the faint scent of rain drifting in through the open terrace doors. Outside, it wasn’t storming anymore—just a slow, quiet drizzle. The kind of rain that made everything feel heavier… lonelier. Adrian Volkov sat in his usual chair near the fireplace. A book rested in his hands, but he hadn’t turned a page in a long time. His eyes were locked on her. Lily Carter sat on the rug near the fire, surrounded by old journals and papers. She wore a loose sweater that kept slipping off her shoulder, and her hair was falling out of a messy braid. In front of her, she carefully pressed a small dried flower into a notebook, her brows slightly furrowed in concentration. She looked soft. Harmless. Like she didn’t belong in this house at all. But Adrian knew better. “You’ve been staring at that same page for twenty minutes, Lily.” His voice broke the silence. Lily jumped a little, her hand slipping as she accidentally knocked over a small glue jar. “Oh! I—I was just…” she rushed, quickly trying to fix it. “I was thinking… about how some flowers only bloom in the dark.” She glanced up at him, her eyes wide and innocent. “It’s strange, right? That something beautiful can grow without sunlight.” Adrian leaned forward slightly, his gaze sharpening. “Nothing grows without light,” he said quietly. “Even things in the dark… they’re feeding on something.” The room felt smaller suddenly. He stood up and walked toward her slowly, his steps silent. When he stopped in front of her and knelt down, the firelight flickered between them. “Tell me something,” he said, his voice low. “Why are you really here?” Lily tilted her head slightly, like she didn’t understand the question. “I told you,” she said softly. “I wanted to help. It’s my way of saying thank you.” Adrian didn’t look convinced. “A girl like you doesn’t end up in a place like this by accident,” he murmured. “This house… isn’t clean, Lily. It’s built on things you don’t want to know about.” His hand lifted, stopping just short of touching her face. “You don’t find that scary?” For a second, Lily looked at his hand. The scars. The strength. The danger. But instead of pulling away… she stayed. Inside, her mind was already working. He’s testing me again. “I think,” she said slowly, “people only see what they want to see.” Her voice changed just a little—calmer, steadier. “You think I don’t belong here because you think you’re a monster. But monsters don’t protect people.” Adrian’s eyes darkened. That tone again. That wasn’t fear. He reached out and gently grabbed her chin, making her look up at him. His grip wasn’t rough—but it was firm enough that she couldn’t ignore it. “There it is,” he said quietly. “That voice. It doesn’t match the girl who keeps tripping over everything.” Lily’s heart was racing, but she didn’t pull away. Instead… she leaned into his touch. “Maybe I’m just tired of being scared,” she whispered. For a moment, neither of them moved. The air between them changed. It felt heavier. Closer. Adrian’s gaze dropped to her lips, and something dangerous flickered in his expression. He wanted to figure her out. But he also wanted something else. Something worse. He let go suddenly, standing up and stepping back. “You should be scared,” he said, turning toward the terrace. “Especially of me.” Lily stayed where she was, watching him carefully. Then— “I looked into your past.” Her body went still. Completely still. “The accident,” Adrian continued. “The missing witness.” Lily’s mind snapped into focus instantly. Every exit. Every object. Every possible move. Stay calm. “And?” she asked, her voice soft, confused. Adrian turned back to her. “Everyone who looks too closely at you… disappears.” Silence. “A little strange for someone like you,” he added. Lily slowly stood up and walked toward him. Careful steps. Slight hesitation. Then— She stumbled. It looked natural. Accidental. She fell right into him. Adrian caught her instantly, his arms wrapping around her waist. For a second, everything else disappeared. Her body pressed against his. Her hands gripping his coat. The faint scent of her—soft, warm, real. He looked down at her. And forgot what he was thinking. Lily looked up at him, their faces inches apart. She could hear his heartbeat. Strong. Steady. And suddenly— Something inside her twisted. Hard. If he finds out… If he knows who she really is… That look in his eyes would change. The thought hit her harder than anything else. He matters. That realization scared her more than the mission ever had. She quickly lowered her gaze, hiding the emotion flashing in her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m always falling.” Adrian didn’t let go. Instead, he pulled her a little closer, resting his chin lightly on her head. For a moment… he just stood there. Like he didn’t want to move. “Maybe I don’t mind catching you,” he murmured. Then he stepped back, slowly letting her go. “Go to bed,” he said, his voice back to normal. “We leave tomorrow.” “Where?” she asked. “The foundry.” Lily’s heart skipped. The foundry. That’s where everything connects. That’s where he will be. “Stay with Viktor,” Adrian added. “It’s not a place for you.” Lily nodded, giving a small, soft smile. “Goodnight, Adrian.” She walked out quietly. But the moment she reached her room— Everything changed. She locked the door. Her shoulders straightened. Her eyes turned cold. Lily Carter disappeared. She walked to her vanity, opened a hidden compartment, and took out a small communicator. “Phase two is active,” she said calmly. “He’s taking me to the foundry tomorrow.” A voice replied from the other side. “And the King?” Lily paused. Her gaze drifted to a small dried flower lying on the table. Her fingers trembled slightly as she picked it up. “If he interferes… what about the King?” Silence. For the first time— Lily hesitated. Her grip tightened around the flower. Images flashed in her mind— His hand on her chin. The way he held her. The way he looked at her… like she was something worth keeping. Her voice came out softer than she expected. “No.” A pause. “He’s mine to handle.” Her tone changed—dangerous, sharp. “If anyone touches Adrian Volkov…” Her eyes hardened. “I will burn everything.” She cut the connection. The room fell silent again. Lily walked to the window, staring out at the rain. Tomorrow, everything will change. The truth. The blood. The choices. And for the first time in her life— She didn’t know what she would choose. Revenge… Or him. The next morning. The car stopped outside the foundry gates. Smoke filled the air. The sound of metal echoed loudly. Adrian stepped out first. Then Lily followed. Her eyes scanned the area— And then she saw him. The man from her past. The man she came to kill. At the same moment— Adrian’s voice went cold beside her. “Stay behind me.” But it was too late. Because across the yard— The man smiled. And raised a gun. Not at Adrian. At Lily.
