Chapter 19: Possession

The Volkov estate was no longer quiet. Gunfire echoed through the lower floors, sharp and violent, followed by screams, shattered glass, and the heavy sound of bodies hitting marble. Red emergency lights flickered through the hallways, turning everything into flashes of blood-colored shadows. But upstairs— Inside Lily’s room— Everything narrowed into one impossible moment. Adrian’s hand still gripped her wrist. His body stood between her and the door instinctively, protectively, as more shots rang out below. “They came for me,” Lily repeated quietly. Not afraid. Certain. That alone sent something cold through Adrian’s chest. Because innocent girls didn’t speak like that. And the dangerous woman didn’t look at him the way she does now. Another explosion shook the floor beneath them. The lights flickered violently. Adrian released her immediately and pulled out his gun. “How many?” he asked. No hesitation. No denial. He believed her. Lily noticed that instantly. “Six minimum,” she replied automatically. “Maybe more outside.” Then she froze. Damn. Too fast. Too precise. Adrian’s eyes snapped toward her. The silence between them shifted. “You counted?” he asked quietly. Lily’s jaw tightened. Gunfire erupted again downstairs before she could answer. A scream followed. One of his men. Adrian looked toward the hallway, his expression darkening instantly. Then back to her. And for the first time— He made a decision that surprised even himself. He handed her a gun. Lily stared at it. Then at him. “You trust me with that?” she asked softly. Adrian stepped closer. Slow. Dangerous. “No,” he said honestly. A pause. “But I trust you more than whoever’s downstairs.” That hit harder than it should have. Before she could respond— The hallway outside exploded with movement. Footsteps. Fast. Two men. Armed. Lily reacted instantly. Her body shifted before thought caught up. One hand grabbed Adrian’s shoulder— The other aimed. Two shots. Precise. Clean. Both men dropped before they crossed the doorway. Silence crashed into the room. Smoke curled slowly from the gun barrel. Lily stood frozen. Because she had just destroyed the last piece of Lily Carter right in front of him. No clumsy act. No softness. No pretending. Only the Queen. Adrian stared at the bodies. Then at her. And something dangerous moved behind his eyes. Not fear. Recognition. “You’ve done this before,” he said quietly. Lily’s breathing slowed. There was no point lying now. “Yes.” Thunder rolled outside. For a moment, neither moved. Then Adrian laughed once. Low. Disbelieving. “You kill like you breathe.” The words should’ve sounded accusing. Instead— They almost sounded impressed. Another gunshot echoed downstairs. Viktor’s voice burst through Adrian’s earpiece. “Sir—we lost the west corridor!” Adrian’s expression hardened instantly. “Fall back to the main hall,” he ordered. Then his eyes returned to Lily. Sharp. Possessive. “Stay behind me.” Lily almost laughed. “You still think I need protection?” “Yes.” The answer came immediately. Cold. Absolute. That surprised her more than the gunfire. Adrian moved toward the hallway, checking corners with practiced precision. Lily followed silently beside him. Not behind. Beside. And somehow— That felt more dangerous than anything else tonight. The hallway below looked like a war zone. Broken glass. Blood across marble floors. Bodies. Smoke. The estate guards were pinned behind overturned furniture while masked attackers advanced through the entrance hall. The second Adrian appeared— Everything changed. Fear spread instantly through the intruders. The King had arrived. Adrian fired without hesitation. One shot. One body. Another. Another. Calm violence. Controlled destruction. Lily watched him carefully as chaos exploded around them. He moved like someone born for this world. No wasted bullets. No panic. Only instinct. And suddenly— She understood why people feared Adrian Volkov. Not because he was cruel. Because he was efficient. A masked man appeared from the left balcony. Sniper. Lily saw him before Adrian did. Time slowed instantly. Angle. Wind. Distance. Without thinking, she grabbed Adrian’s collar and yanked him backward. The sniper bullet tore through the wall exactly where his head had been. Adrian turned sharply. Lily has already been fired. The sniper collapsed over the railing. Dead before he hit the ground. Everything stopped for half a second. His men. The attackers. Everyone staring. Because the mysterious quiet girl beside Adrian Volkov had just saved his life publicly. Again. One of the attackers whispered in horror— “The Queen…” Silence. Real silence this time. Lily’s blood went cold. Too late. Adrian heard it. Of course, he did. Slowly— Very slowly— He turned toward her. “The Queen?” he repeated quietly. Not anger. Not confusion. Something worse. Understanding. The masked attacker realized his mistake instantly and ran. Adrian shot him in the back without even looking. Dead before he reached the door. Then Adrian stepped toward Lily. The entire room felt dangerous suddenly. Not because of the guns. Because of him. “The Queen,” he repeated. His gaze burned into hers. “The ghost who dismantled empires.” Another step closer. “The assassin I’ve been hunting for three years.” Lily’s fingers tightened around her weapon. Around them, the gunfight slowly faded as Adrian’s men regained control. But neither of them noticed. Because suddenly— Nothing existed except this truth between them. Adrian stopped directly in front of her. Too close. His expression was unreadable. Then— Unexpectedly— His hand lifted. Brushed gently against her cheek. Not violence. Not rage. Something far more dangerous. Awe. “It was you,” he murmured. Lily’s heartbeat finally became uneven. Because he didn’t look betrayed. He looked fascinated. And that terrified her more than hatred ever could.
