Chapter 15: The Anatomy of a Storm

1150 Words
The rain wasn’t just falling that night—it was attacking the Volkov estate like it had something personal against it. It hit the tall glass windows again and again, loud and restless, like it wouldn’t stop until something broke. The sky kept flashing with lightning, and for a moment, everything outside looked pale and lifeless. Inside, the room felt warm—but not peaceful. Lily stood near the glass doors, her arms wrapped around herself as she watched the storm. Every time lightning flashed, her reflection disappeared, and for a second, she looked like she wasn’t even there… like she could vanish any moment. “The storm is getting worse,” she said softly, almost like she wanted someone to notice. Adrian didn’t even look at her. He was sitting in his chair, holding a glass of whiskey, staring at nothing in particular. His shirt was slightly open at the collar, his sleeves rolled up. He looked calm—but there was something heavy about him tonight. “Storms don’t care about us,” he said in a low voice. “They just come… and you feel them whether you like it or not.” Lily turned away, walking back toward the fireplace. She knew how to act—every move, every reaction. She had practiced this version of herself so many times. But tonight… something went wrong. Her foot caught the edge of the rug. Normally, she would’ve controlled it. Made it look soft, harmless. But this time—it was real. She slipped. Her knee hit the sharp edge of the table, and a sharp pain shot through her body. “Lily!” Adrian was beside her instantly. One second he was across the room, and the next he was holding her. His hands were firm, steady, warm. It was almost shocking how fast he moved. “I’m okay—I’m okay…” she said quickly, her breathing uneven. “I’m just… clumsy.” But when she looked down, her knee was bleeding. The cut wasn’t too deep, but it was enough. To anyone else, it would’ve been scary. To Lily… it was just something to observe. Pain. Depth. Reaction. Her heartbeat stayed steady. Adrian noticed the blood—and his expression changed. Something darker came into his eyes. Not just concern… something more intense. Almost angry. “Sit,” he said. No softness. No question. He picked her up easily and placed her near the fire. Then he walked away for a second and came back with water and a cloth. And then— He sat down on the floor in front of her. That alone felt strange. The same man people feared… sitting like this, cleaning her wound carefully, slowly, like it mattered more than anything else. “You’re not scared,” Adrian said quietly while wiping the blood away. “Most girls would be crying.” Lily froze for a second. He noticed. Of course, he did. She quickly looked down, biting her lip. “I think I’m just… shocked. It hasn’t started hurting properly yet.” That part was a lie. It hurt. A lot. But she let her hand rest lightly on his arm, pretending to need support. His arm was strong, warm… real. And for one dangerous second— She felt safe. That thought scared her more than the pain. “You’re hiding something,” Adrian said softly. His hands didn’t stop, but his eyes were on her now. Watching. Studying. “There’s something… still about you. I’ve seen it before. In people who have been through things, they shouldn’t have survived.” Lily’s chest tightened. “Maybe you’re just overthinking,” she said quietly. Adrian stopped. The room went silent except for the rain and the fire. Then he reached up and gently held her chin, lifting her face so she had no choice but to look at him. They were too close. She could feel his breath. His eyes dropped to her lips, and the way he looked at her… it wasn’t normal. It wasn’t a simple attraction. It was something deeper. Something dangerous. “I don’t understand what I feel when I’m around you,” Adrian said, his voice low. “And I don’t like not understanding things.” Lily felt her control slipping. This wasn’t supposed to happen. She was here for a reason. She had a mission. She was supposed to destroy him… not feel like this. But when his thumb brushed lightly over her lower lip— Everything inside her got confused. She leaned in, just a little. Not like the innocent Lily. Not fully like the person she really was either. Something in between. Adrian’s hand moved to the back of her neck, pulling her closer. Their foreheads touched. “If you’re lying to me…” he whispered, his voice dark, almost dangerous, “I won’t let you go.” Her breath caught. “I’ll keep you,” he continued softly, “until your lie becomes the truth.” Lily’s heart finally skipped. “Then don’t try to find out,” she whispered. That was it. Something snapped between them. Adrian moved closer. So close. Their lips were almost touching— And then— The door suddenly opened. “Sir—” Viktor’s voice cut through everything. “The shipment from the docks has been intercepted.” The moment shattered. Adrian didn’t move immediately. For three seconds, he stayed right there, close to Lily, his hand still in her hair, his eyes still locked on hers. It felt like time stopped. Like he was choosing something. Then— He stepped back. Just like that. The warmth disappeared. His face changed. Cold. Hard. Untouchable. The Mafia King was back. He stood up without looking at her. “Handle it,” he said to Viktor. Then he paused at the door. “And lock the doors,” he added. “She stays inside.” No emotion. No softness. Nothing. And then he left. Lily stayed where she was. The maid came closer with bandages, but Lily didn’t even notice her. Her eyes were still on the door. Her knee hurt. But not as much as the strange emptiness in her chest. She slowly touched her lip… the place where his thumb had been. What was happening to her? She was supposed to be in control. She was supposed to be the one playing the game. But now… It didn’t feel that way anymore. Outside, the storm kept getting worse. Inside— Something had already broken. And just as Lily tried to steady her thoughts— A sudden loud sound echoed from somewhere deep inside the mansion. Not thunder. Not the storm. Something else. Something… closer. Lily’s head snapped toward the hallway. The maid froze too. Then— The lights flickered. And went out. Darkness. Complete silence. And somewhere in that silence— A door creaked open.
