Chapter 1: The Midnight Mistake

1010 Words
“He was supposed to die that night.” “Instead… he met me.” The rain wasn’t gentle. It didn’t fall—it attacked. Sharp drops slammed against the pavement, echoing through the empty streets like a warning no one was meant to hear. Streetlights flickered, reflecting off the flooded road, turning the city into something distorted… almost unreal. Too quiet. Too still. Like it was waiting. For something to break. Under the broken shade of a closed flower shop stood Lily Carter. Drenched. Shivering. And completely out of place. “Wow… amazing,” she muttered under her breath, brushing wet strands of hair from her face. “Five minutes outside and I’m already dying. Good job, Lily.” Her phone rang inside her tote bag. She reached for it— And missed. The bag slipped. Splash. It landed straight into a muddy puddle. “Oh no—!” She dropped to her knees instantly, panic flashing across her face as she scrambled to pick up her things. A notebook. A lip balm. And— A small silver compass. For anyone watching, she was just a girl having a bad night. Clumsy. Careless. Innocent. But the moment her fingers touched the compass— Everything changed. Her hands stilled. Not shaky anymore. Not rushed. Precise. Controlled. Her breathing evened out. Her eyes lifted slowly, scanning the empty street—not with fear… But with calculation. Distance. Angles. Threat levels. For a second— She wasn’t Lily Carter. She was something else. Something dangerous. Then— It vanished. She blinked, fumbling again, knocking her elbow against the ground as if nothing had changed. The act was back. Perfect. Across the street, inside a black luxury car— Adrian Volkov was watching. Silent. Still. His sharp gaze didn’t leave the girl outside, even as rain streaked across the tinted glass. “Sir, the meeting starts in twenty minutes,” Viktor reminded. Adrian didn’t respond. There was something wrong. She looked fragile. Soft. The kind of girl who wouldn’t survive a night like this. And yet— His instincts refused to believe it. Then it happened. A flash of headlights lit her face. For a split second— She didn’t look weak. She looked like a threat. Adrian’s fingers tapped once against the armrest. Decision made. “Stop the car.” “Sir?” “I said stop.” The door opened. Rain rushed in. And Adrian stepped out like he owned the storm itself. Lily looked up. And for the first time— Her act almost slipped. Just for a second. He wasn’t supposed to be here. “You’re making quite a mess,” he said, voice low. Controlled. “I—uh…” she stuttered softly, clutching her bag tighter. “It’s just… really slippery…” She stepped back— And fell. “Ah—!” Before she could hit the ground, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her forward. She collided lightly against him. For a moment— Everything stilled. To Adrian— she felt warm. Soft. Breakable. To Lily— Her heartbeat didn’t change. Not even slightly. Calm. Steady. Measured. Her fingers curled into his coat— just enough to feel real. “Careful,” he murmured. “Thank you…” she said, lowering her gaze, voice soft. “I’m really clumsy.” Adrian tilted her chin up slightly. Studying her. Too innocent. Too perfect. Too controlled. Suspicious. “This isn’t a safe place,” he said. Lily gave a small smile. “I’ll be okay.” Silence stretched between them. Then— “I’m Lily… Lily Carter.” “Adrian.” No reaction. No recognition. Nothing. Interesting. “Well…” she said, pulling out a slightly damp chocolate bar with a shy smile, “Do you want some?” For a second— Adrian almost smiled. “Keep it,” he said. “You need it more.” Then his tone shifted. Colder. “Where do you live?” “Oh—it’s okay, I live nearby—” “It wasn’t a question.” A pause. Then she nodded. “Okay…” Inside the car, Lily looked around in quiet wonder, her fingers brushing lightly over the leather seats. Like she had never seen anything like it before. Adrian watched her. Closely. Too closely. Every movement. Every breath. She looked simple. Too simple. But her hand— Rested inside her bag. Not nervous. Ready. “You’re very quiet,” she said softly. “Are you always like this?” “Life is serious.” She leaned her head against the window, watching the rain. “Maybe… but bad nights don’t last forever.” Adrian didn’t reply. But he didn’t look away either. When the car stopped, she smiled. “This is me. Thank you… really.” She stepped out. Waved once. And disappeared. Adrian didn’t move. Even after she was gone. “Viktor.” “Yes, sir?” “Find out everything about her.” A pause. “Do you think she’s dangerous?” Adrian looked at the empty seat beside him. A single flower petal rested there. He picked it up slowly… crushing it between his fingers. “I think…” he said quietly, “She’s exactly what she wants me to see.” Inside the building— Lily’s smile disappeared. Completely. Her posture straightened. Her steps turned silent. Precise. Cold. She ignored the elevator. Took the stairs. Slipped an earpiece into her ear. “Status?” a voice asked. “Contact made,” she said calmly. “Adrian Volkov.” “Did he suspect anything?” A pause. Then— A faint smile. “Not enough.” She unlocked her door. Stepped inside. Closed it softly. Her voice dropped— sharp. Deadly. “He thinks he’s watching me…” Silence. Then— “But he doesn’t know…” Her eyes darkened. “He was never the target.” A pause. “And this…” Her lips curved slightly. “…was never a coincidence.” Click. “Let the game begin.”
