Kyle
“Maggie, right?” he asked tentatively as he stepped closer. She inched backwards, pressing her back against the door she hadn’t unlocked yet. She lifted her phone and checked, the time? She then hurriedly rifled with the keys and fumbled to unlock the door.
“Please,” she begged, the strain clear in her voice, “you have to leave.” She wasn’t facing him anymore, the door swung open and he could smell the bleach coming from the long hallway.
“I need to talk to you, I need to explain. I wasn’t going to hurt you.” He had to make her see, make her believe that he wasn’t a bad guy.
“I know Kyle, please, you have to leave.” Again with trying to rush him off, it was already 11:30 what was she worried about? The lights were all out he’d bet her parents were asleep already.
He didn’t even think, just reached out and grabbed her hand to turn her around, she spun around and stared into his yellow eyes; her grey eyes were full and round, pleading with him to do as she asked, tears glistened in the corners of her big beautiful eyes. Small electric shots, like strong tingles, were shooting all up his hand and arm as he held hers tightly in his, he looked down only for a second, and she was back to the door, until she stopped dead in her tracks.
Car headlights shone around the trees, lighting them up and he saw all kinds of creatures filling the trees as their homes, owls mainly, considering the late hour. The headlights turned, as did the car they were lighting the path for; he turned and saw the yellow cab only briefly before she grabbed him by the hand, tingles again, and dragged him into the house, closing the door behind them with her foot.
The urgency in her movements was almost frightening; she headed first, down the long hallway to the kitchen and dug around in the large chest freezer, the light opening up and swimming the kitchen with bright white lights. She shoved a pot in the microwave and the hurried him back down the hallway, turned up the stairs to their right and pulled him all the way up, ensuring she took their bags with her as well, the two flights of stairs. They passed many closed doors until, finally, they reached what felt like the highest room in the house. He laughed as he thought about the fairy tales where the princess is locked away in the highest room of the tallest tower.
Maggie glared at him as she pressed her hand, hard, against his mouth and lifted her finger to her own lips signalling him to be silent. Car doors slammed closed in the distance; the
sound of laughter and playfulness danced in the win as what he assumed was two people approached the house. ‘Who is that?’ he wondered. The look on his face must have been clear as she shoved him into her bedroom her grey eyes pled with him again to please be quiet. He nodded in agreement.
Kyle removed her hand gently from his mouth, she shot him a warning glance and he nodded, his yellow eyes softening into the silent pact to remain quiet. She reached for a piece of paper and began scribbling with shaking hands onto it.
Please be SILENT, I will be back I promise, in about fifteen minutes, I hope. I’ll explain more then and I’ll drive you home as soon as they are asleep.
The note completely baffled him, he had absolutely no idea what was going on, or what he had gotten himself into. All that filled him was worry; she looked terrified, even more so that when they’d met earlier on and it took all he had to not take her in his arms and hold her so tight that all her worries went away.
She left him then, in the dark cold room that was her bedroom.
