Chapter 13 Kaeva It was ending much like it had begun: on the beach, waiting. The sun was rising in a glory of flame-colored hues, and the tide was coming in. Kaeva sat on the cool sand, legs bent and arms around his knees. He was exhausted. At first, he’d walked, aimlessly but angrily. On Eddie’s last day, Kaeva had stomped his familiar paths through groves of trees. He’d made his way to the barren dock and stood over the spot where he’d made his original camp weeks ago. He’d walked to the end of the dock and gazed at the path toward town. Instead of continuing to retrace his journey with Eddie, though, he’d broken away and trudged to the other side of the island in the growing darkness. Night insects had sung him a lullaby. Usually it was comforting. But this time, nothing could be.
