The scent of fried meat churned Eddie’s guts the moment he walked into the kitchen. It was sweet and rich and not a smell that Eddie could place, but he told himself not to fuss over what furry little critter might have met its end in snare or trap or god-knew-what and to enjoy the results. There were shelled, whole eggs that had been boiled and salted, and a pan full of potatoes fried with onions and carrots. They each had a steaming cup of dark liquid that Eddie first took for coffee but was pleasantly surprised at the aroma of chocolate when he lifted his cup.
