Chapter Five – The Fiancée Returns

539 Words
Rossy had managed to avoid Thomas for the last day and a half—barely. It helped that her department was on a different floor, and that he was trying to give her space. Or pretending to. She wasn’t sure which was worse—his silence or her obsession with it. But the quiet ended when the office suddenly buzzed with a name she hadn’t heard before. Isabella Langston. No title. No introduction. Just a whisper… she’s back. Rossy didn’t even get the chance to wonder who she was before the elevator chimed—and out stepped a woman who looked like she belonged in a Vogue spread. Tall. Effortlessly elegant. Designer everything. And clinging to Thomas’s arm like she’d never let go. He didn’t pull away, but his body was stiff. Guarded. Rossy couldn’t look away. Isabella’s gaze swept the office—calculating, confident—then landed on Rossy. She smiled. It wasn’t kind. Later, Rossy was grabbing printouts from the supply room when the door creaked open behind her. “Rossy Bennett,” Isabella said like she was tasting the name. Rossy turned slowly. “Yes?” “Thought so.” Isabella stepped in, letting the door close behind her. “You’re… quite the surprise.” Rossy raised a brow. “I’m sorry?” “Oh, don’t be,” Isabella said, tilting her head. “I already knew about you. I’ve known for a while.” Rossy’s stomach turned. Isabella’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Thomas isn’t the type to talk much about his personal life. But when he started acting… different, I made it my business to find out why.” She walked a slow circle around the room. Her heels echoed sharply on the floor. “I’ve known him since we were kids. Our families are close—too close for him to ever hide anything from me. So when he started skipping events, pulling back, being… distracted—I knew a woman was involved.” She stopped in front of Rossy, eyes narrowing. “But I never thought it’d be someone like you.” Rossy’s fists clenched. “Someone like me?” “Plain. Humble. From nowhere,” Isabella said softly. “But pretty. Sexy, actually. And that’s what got to me. Because Thomas—he’s never looked at anyone the way he looks at you.” Rossy tried not to react, but her breath caught. Isabella smiled again, cold and slow. “You think that’s romantic? It’s not. It’s dangerous. He’s being stupid. Risking everything for you.” Rossy straightened. “If he’s risking everything, then maybe I’m worth it.” That hit something. For a moment, the mask slipped—and Rossy saw it. The desperation. The obsession. The fear. Isabella had loved Thomas her whole life. But he had never loved her back. Not once. And now, suddenly, this girl—Rossy—was the one thing she could never be. Wanted. That night, Rossy couldn’t sleep. The look in Isabella’s eyes haunted her. Not because she was scared—but because, for the first time, she understood. This wasn’t just about a fling. Or some forbidden crush. This was war. And she wasn’t going to back down. Not anymore.
