Chapter V
A Forsaken NetJohn was afraid that Sir Christopher would, in his impatience, open the door before the train came to a complete stop and fall out, but he did not dare to say anything. Even before they arrived at Prato, Sir Christopher had been so fidgety that John understood immediately that he was meant to pile up the luggage in the cramped vestibule near the exit, thereby ensuring that no one could pass before them. Now that the train had clapped into Santa Maria Novella station, and whilst it was still jolting back and forth, Sir Christopher began frantically to rattle the door handle and to push and twist the red knob to its right. When, at last, the door did open – of its own accord – Sir Christopher bounded out of the carriage, nearly losing his footing in the process. John
