‘Good, that’s settled then,’ Sir Christopher pronounced. ‘Now where’s that letter from the man who’s writing the biography of little old Lettice? What’s his name?’ ‘Norman Port. Here it is,’ John said, retrieving a sheet of coarse beige paper from the bottom of a bulging stack of correspondence. ‘Funny name, isn’t it? Porter would be one thing. But Mr Port? Why not Mr Sherry? He sounds just like the sort of odd character who would have latched on to Lettice. To judge from his curious letter, it would appear that it was old Lettice who first came up with the idea of a biography – in the end, she did have a very good opinion of herself – but that she then did an about-face and tried desperately to block the book’s publication.
