Chapter 9

You know in that moment when you finally start to accept the changes around but then you realize that they aren’t just changes and that everything is just different. Change would be living in a new house and moving to a new town. Different is having your mother try to kill you because she forgot that your allergic to Hazelnuts. Its having her serve you eggs for lunch even though she knows that you hate eggs. Its like having one of your best friends look you in the eye and tells you that for your 7th birthday she both you Legos when she knows she didn’t. It hurts when she said you demanded a Puppy but your dad was allergic to them when in fact you wanted a cat and she was allergic to fur! Then two random strangers tells you that you’re the King of fishes. Its like I was living in an alternate dimension. Then again if mermaids were real, what were the chance of that being real too. Suddenly the front door was pushed opened. Willa, Hailey and Ethan entered the house unannounced. “Sorry for barging in but Ethan has something to say to you Charles,” Willa said nudging Ethan in my direction. Ethan rolled his eyes and muttered something inaudible. “What was that,” Willa asked staring at him incredulously. He was saved when my mother walked out of the kitchen with Iris’s friends trailing behind her. “Oh Charles I didn’t know that you made new friends already,” my mother started walking towards Ethan, “hi, I’m Charles's mother,” she said shaking his hand with a smile. A squeal came from Willa and she suddenly attacked Green's hair. “Omg, I love your hair its like so soft and I love the color,” she said running her fingers through it. She then noticed the little girl who wouldn’t tell me her name and starts squealing at her too. “And what’s your name cutie,” she said giggling. Why were they in my house when they were not my friends. I quite literally just met them a day ago. Wen and Piper grab a nervous Hailey and pulled her to an empty seat and started pulling at her hair unlike my mother though she looked terrified. Speaking of my mother she was currently glancing at her watch. What are you waiting for, mom? From the corner of my eyes I caught a glimpse of Ethan who had taken it upon himself to teach boys to use my laptop, MY LAPTOP. He will feel pain if its damaged. “Ouuh, I’m going to go get baby pictures,” my mom suddenly said and escaped upstairs. Time froze. I could hear my heart thundering. I needed to calm down but how could I calm down and what baby pictures was she taking about. All the pictures that were taken of me when I was baby was burned when I was 5. The only baby picture she had left was hanging around her neck. Now that I think about it, she wasn’t wearing her necklace. My fingers run through my hair and I grip it in the root, tugging at it rather roughly. She doesn’t remember significant moments from my childhood. She’s not wearing her necklace, she doesn’t even remember my likes and my dislikes. My hands suddenly began to shake uncontrollably. And then it stopped. All thoughts left my mind and I just stared blankly. From my peripheral vision I saw Hailey glanced at me with worry in her eyes. And unsettling feeling entered my stomach and it wasn’t from the look Hailey was currently giving me it was something different, something dangerous. My head moved on its own towards the direction of the door. 5 seconds later in a blur the door slammed opened. A figure stepped into the house. Everyone sat frozen in their position as a strikingly beautiful woman stepped into the house. She had slick black hair that was wet with water dripping from it, her eyes was blood red. She was dressed in clothes clearly too big for her slim form. She slowly walked forward and survey the room. She stomped the spear in her hand to the floor twice and sneered when her eyes past Iris. “Tash,” Green whispered fear laced in her voice. All the mermaids in the room tensed as she took a few more steps closer to where we all sat. “The sirens' leader,” Iris muttered under her breathe, but I heard it and something else, terror. She was terrified. Tash snarled at Green and stomps her spear again. Someone gasps and Tash’s head snaps to that direction. She stepped closer into that direction, my eyes follow her as she steps closer to my mother. She snarls at Willa, who suddenly threw something resembling a card at her. It sliced through Tash's cheek and edges itself in the wall behind her. What the…..? Tash screeched, as blood oozed from her wound. Her eyes widened in a maniac way and her head snapped in my mother’s direction. My mother stood at the end of the stairs with small smile on her face. Suddenly a dark mist engulfed her and her eyes turned obsidian. Time slowed as I rose from the couch. Who was she? I watched perplexed as, Tash stopped in front of my mother grinning like a lunatic my heart skipped a beat when Tasha suddenly flipped her spear and slammed the spear head to the floor. They both disappeared. The anxiety return. That woman wasn’t my mother. She looked like her, talked liked her but she wasn’t her. I was living in a strangers house.
