Final RemissionThe immediate problem was how to move Joseph to safety. Although severe, his malnourishment was not life threatening, and what he needed far more than blood was a good long spell of supernatural sleep. Unfortunately, he was making up for his recent lack of it with an impenetrable coma which none of their efforts could break, including shaking him, trickling animal blood in his mouth, and — to Lucille's disappointment, if not surprise — kisses of any duration or intensity. Neither she nor Robert felt equal to the experiment of feeding him Drayton's blood, and so they ordered the major to have a van waiting for them at the supply entrance, that they might at least be spared the task of manhandling Joseph all the way back to Spitalfields.
