Chapter 13

1602 Words
CLAIRE Hunter is suffocating me with his attention. Wherever I go, he wants to come with— If I didn’t know better I would have sworn Jet asked him to keep an eye on me or something. Seated at the breakfast table with the rest of them, an opportunity finally presented itself for me to carry out one of my plans. Jet and Hunter had made up their minds about tracking Heather and Gianna to the headquarters, which made sense since I didn’t try and convince Hunter otherwise. Trisha didn’t know that, when she asked me how the conversation went, I simply told her Hunter refused to listen to me. Wiping the corner of my mouth with a napkin, I smiled inwardly with satisfaction as I watched my plans form together. Now for the next stage of my plan, I cleared my throat, attracting their attention. “Jet, I think the other Alphas have a right to be worried about the humans you are harbouring in the Pack. I mean, I get that we’ve all moved past how they treated us hence the phrase ‘not all humans’ but the other Packs have not experienced them the same way we have.” “Their concerns do not bother me.” Jet replied, his tone dismissive. I glanced over at Hunter, knowing he would understand better since his judgement wouldn’t be clouded, for he has no emotional connection to a human. “What do you think Hunter? The Beta mansion is for Betas, to establish their own life outside of the Alpha, but it’s currently being occupied by humans. These are just concerns I have that no one is addressing, perhaps we shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss their concerns.” “I think you have a point.” Trisha chimed in, surprising me. “Claire, the plan has always been to return the humans back to where they belong but without destroying the Grayson Mafia organisation, it’s like moving in circles.” Hunter nodded, holding eye contact with me. “There’s an Alpha meeting coming up in a few days, we intend to discuss it there.” At his words, I forced a smile to my face then pushed my chair back. Muttering some excuse me under my breath, I exit the dining table, my thoughts swirling with the next course of action. Up until now, I have never been interested in the political aspect of running the pack. For the longest time, the duties have fallen onto Jet until Hunter completed his training as well and joined him. Now, Kale is in training to become the Pack Gamma and I wished I had shown a little more interest. Darting a look over my shoulder to make certain I wasn’t followed by anyone, I stepped into Jet’s study, shutting the door behind me. One would think after he catches his human pet snooping around a few times, he would start locking his study. That’s one of Jet’s greatest flaws. Too trusting! Although I’d say after Sophie’s betrayal, he was learning to see people for what they truly are. How he fails to see that the human pest he keeps by his side will be the death of us all, fail me. Going through his drawers in hopes to find information about the other Alphas, how to connect with them and set up a meeting. I couldn’t find anything… Suddenly, I sensed a presence behind me and snapped around, dreading who I might come to find. The only person who could move undetected like that was Jet. His Lycan nature made him extremely hard to detect, a tracker worst nightmare really. Camille does come close due to the fact that she had been trained by the council to be sneaky. “And how may I help you?” He tilts his head, shooting his left eyebrow up in question. Trying not to arouse his suspicion, I plastered a small smile on my face. “I was just going through your desk in hopes that I find something that reminds me of my bond… with you.” He stiffened, a glimpse of softness passing over his eyes but it was gone in a flash. “You hope to find that in my study? I suggest you head to the storage, everything you need is there.” “Did I do something wrong Jet? You have been extremely cold toward me since you and Hunter rescued me. I know Trisha is suspicious that Heather has messed with my head but I’m completely fine.” “I don’t like mysteries Claire, while I’m pleased to have you back. Going back to the instruction will give me all the answers I need.” “By all means go… but promise me if you come across Gianna or Heather, you will capture them alive. I want the honor of killing then,” I told him. The corner of his mouth lifted. “I won’t make such promises.” The conversation ended there and I returned to the passage where I debated whether to go back to my bedroom. I decided against it when I realized there’s one place I haven’t checked yet. Taking a deep breath, I exited the castle and crossed over to the south, heading for the Beta mansion. At this point, they need to rename it the human sanctuary due to the number of humans living there. I could feel their eyes on me as I made my way through the passage, heading for Hunter’s study. Being there brings back memories, the days where things were simple, where I roamed these halls with Hunter, Kale, Morgana and Jet, playing hide and seek. Pain crawled at my chest, leaving me breathless until I stabbed my palm with one of my claws, numbing out the pain. “Lady Claire!” One of the servants spotted me, stopping in her tracks. “Is there something I can get you? I’m sorry if someone hasn't asked you that yet, there’s a shortage of staff.” “I see.” I hissed between my teeth. “Go ahead with your chores, I know where to find everything I need.” I only continued after she disappeared through one of the doors. Coming to a halt in front of Hunter’s study, I knocked on the door to make sure no one was inside before I went in. The place was exactly as I remembered, including the picture of me on his desk. Rolling my eyes at the terrible photograph, I slammed it face down on the desk before I started to go through his drawers. It also made sense that Jet would hide whatever he needs hiding from his study here since they both make use of his study more. Pulling out the power drawer, I stopped finding what I hoped was what I’m looking for. However, a brief knock sounded on the door and a second later, Hunter poked his head through it. “I was wondering where you were, the entrance guards told me I would find you here…” he stopped. “What do we have there?” As he moved toward me, I hid the document behind me. My action just translated to him as playfulness because he leaned over to pluck me right off my hand, lingering a bit. I stepped away from him, putting some distance between us. “There’s no telling when you and Jet will be back so I thought about handling some business while you are gone. You know, the meetings with the Alphas and I wanted to find out more information about them.” His eyes reflected his surprise. “Claire, you should be resting. You have been through so much, you should leave this to Jet and me.” “Don’t you see it? I can’t rest. I can’t sleep at night without being frightened that someone snatched me from the comfort of my bed. I need to do something to distract myself from how tragic my life has gotten. I have no Wolf, no memories of what happened to me at the institution, Jet is treating me like a distant stranger…” My voice cracked with the force of my emotion and tears rolled down my face. “I don’t even remember that our mate bonds, so tell me… would you rather I dwell on these losses or do something to distract myself from it while being of help to you.” “Claire…” he breathed, his voice quivering a little as he pulled me in. His embrace felt familiar, being engulfed by his sense brought me a sense of relief, peace and security. I felt his emotion, his love, his devotion and I hate it all… except the devotion which I plan to use for the success of my plan. I let the embrace go on for about a few more minutes before pulling back. “It’s okay if you don’t trust me, I will keep my distance.” “What?” He panicked, grabbing my wrist to stop me from leaning. “That’s absurd, I trust you more than anyone.” “More than Jet?” I pushed, meeting his eyes, admiring how the rich brown colour shines until it turns golden, a reflection of his wolf. “More than anyone…” he repeated, running his fingers through my hair. “I will do anything for you Claire, anything.” ‘I’m counting on it’ I thought, taking the document back from him, and just like that the second phase of my plans is in motion!
