CLAIRE
“Hunter!” I cried, running into his arms, catching him off guard as I wrapped my arms around his neck. For a split moment, I felt his body tensed against me, I could sense the confusion radiating from him through our bond before he slightly pulled back to look at me.
“I don’t understand what’s going on with me, I feel so scared.” My voice quivered as I held on to him, afraid of letting go. “One minute I’m in control of myself, the next I can’t seem to phantom what’s wrong with me.”
His gaze moved past my face to my head instead, his hand reached out to drag out a stream of white hair which left me puzzled because where did that come from? Last time I checked, I have long dark hair, not as dark as Lady Muna whose hair is the same colour as Jet—jet black.
His hand dropped from my hair as he turned to address Camille, who I had forgotten was here until now. She had the same puzzled expression on her face, making me cling to him even though he was urging me to her.
“Camille, escort Claire to her room.” He instructed.
Looking over my shoulder while Camille escorted me back to the guest room, I watched Hunter disappear down the passageway wondering where he was headed.
On getting to the bedroom, I slumped down on the bed, the sound of pouring water temporarily distracting me from my thoughts. When she extended the glass of water toward me, I took a sip and handed it back to her.
“You have everyone very confused Claire…or should I say Flaire. Are you feeling alright?” She asked, her eyes moving across myself as if whatever that’s wrong with me was going to appear on my face.
The door opened before I could form a reply to her question. Relieved to see Hunter again, I made to approach him, pausing when Trisha appeared behind him.
Without words, she approached me, her eyes glued to the streak of white hair. Leaning over, she stared into my eyes, probably looking for a hint of my wolf or something.
“I’m going to ask you a few questions, do you remember anything? Your life before the accident, during the accident and after the accident?” She questioned.
Darting a look in Hunter’s direction, I refocus my attention back to Trisha. “I remember everything, up until I was taken by Heather then I cannot recall anything else after that. Do you think they did something to mess with my memories so I don’t lead you guys back to their headquarters?”
“That wouldn’t make sense since Jet and I were able to track them, we know where their headquarters is.” Hunter answered, folding his arms across his chest.
I wished I knew what was going on in his mind as I’ve never felt so further away from him. The fact that I couldn’t read his thoughts meant he blocked them from me, the thought of him not trusting me was heart breaking.
“Perhaps Claire knows something we don’t.” Trisha suggested, stepping away from me. “Heather, it's powerful enough to alter someone’s memories, perhaps Claire knows something they don’t want us to…”
“A spell that powerful can mess with people’s mind, it could also explain why Claire believes she is this other person while still insisting to be Claire.”
“f**k!” He hissed, running his fingers through his hair.
Although I couldn’t read his thoughts, I felt his anger, his pain. What could they be trying to prevent me from knowing? They must have known the others would come for me, I searched far into the corners of my mind desperately, trying to remember anything, but my mind was blank.
Jet’s entrance in the room put a pause on the conversation. His eyes flickered to Hunter’s then turned to me. At least when he looked at me now, his eyes weren’t as guarded as they were before.
“It is decided then, we cannot let Heather’s influence on Claire continue, you know what happens when they get into your heads.”
“No.” Trisha whispered, shaking her head.
“Jet and I are going back to the headquarters to check if there’s anything that might lead us to finding that doctor and Heather. There’s a high chance they will anticipate our coming back therefore we might not even find what we are looking for, this is a plan B.”
At first I didn’t know why Trisha would disagree but after Hunter explained what they intended to do, I shook my head.
Dreading the idea of something happening to them, I swallowed hard. “You can’t go back there, especially not this soon. It is too dangerous!”
“Would you rather we go with plan A instead? You may not be aware of this but Sophie is locked up in one of the basement, we kept her bleeding all this time to weaken her. Jet and I are thinking of making a deal with her, to find Heather and remove her influence on you.”
“What?” My eyes widened so much that it felt like they might pop out of my socket. A part of me was even surprised Jet hadn’t ripped her apart yet which made me believe Freya might have something to do with that.
“Nobody is doing any of that.” Trisha raised her voice, shutting down the conversation. “What we are going to do is wait until Freya comes back.”
That piqued Jet’s interest. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
Trisha shrunk away from their gaze, realizing she shouldn’t have said anything. While I had no idea what Freya could do to help my current situation, I didn’t miss how close they were becoming after my accident and before I was taken.
“Nothing.” She shrugged off her shoulders. “I just think you will be more grounded in not making any decision based on anger if she was here, it’s no secret she’s the one you listen to mostly.”
Something tells me Jet wasn’t buying whatever it is Trisha was telling him but he let it go. When he began to walk towards me, I looked at him curiously, wondering what he was up to.
“You have no idea how glad and relieved I am to see you are unharm. I promise you this, I will not rest until they do what they did to you…Fair Claire.” He concluded by pulling me into his embrace.
The nickname triggered something in me, causing me to break into a sob as I cling to him. Although, growing up he never called me that but I knew someone who did. When I would wake up screaming in the middle of the night, Lady Muna would come into my room, put me in her laps and rock me back to sleep.
I no longer remember what my birth parents look like because each time I close my eyes, Lady Muna and Alpha Jordan are what comes to mind. They may not have been my parents, they treated me like I was their child.
I became aware of Jet pulling back, when I looked up at him, I wasn’t surprised to find him looking rattled by my tears. He hurriedly passed me to Hunter, not before I glimpse the tears in his own eyes.
“Jet, can I talk to you please?” Trisha called his attention and they both left, leaving Hunter and I alone.
When the last of my tears died down, I pulled away from Hunter. “Why did he have to call me that?”
Hunter’s lips quickened up. “Would you have preferred ‘weird kid?’ — ouch!”
He playfully flinched when I smacked him. Looking around the room, I wanted to be out of it already even though I understood why they put me there in the first place.
I was on the verge of telling him but paused when I realized he wanted to say something. Sometimes, I feel he still isn’t used to talking even though he does it so effortlessly now.
Watching him first say everything in his head reminded me of the past when he first started learning to speak again, it was a trick I taught him. To go over everything in his head so he doesn’t stumble or stammer when he says them out loud.
“I know it’s selfish of me but I’m still conflicted on whether I’m glad you don’t remember what those monsters put you through or if I should be worried that you don’t.”
Reaching for his hand, I squeezed it. “I understand, but I’m going to try. If there’s a chance that I might know something to help us bring down our enemies then I want to remember everything.”
I sensed his hesitation so I asked. “Is something wrong?”
He let go of my hand. “You said something while you were Flaire, about not wanting a mate—”
I interrupted him. “It is all Heather's fault, whatever she has done to me made me act that way but you have nothing to worry about. There’s nothing she could do to me that will ever make me question our bond, you’re my mate Hunter and nothing will change that.”
Seeing him visibly relaxed made me smile, especially when he pulled me into a hug… bingo!
