It was the only room with an attached ovara, that is, a urinal. There were three ovaras in the house; two in the ground floor and one in the upper story. There wasn't any toilet in the house. The people in the village depended on fields and bushes for that matter. This was also one of the complaints of her town-cousins. The only house in Janu's knowledge with a toilet was her uncle Raman's. He built it recently and it was only used by him also. He suddenly became very much inspired to built a toilet and be done with open defecation after one of his travels. Uncle Raman traveled a lot. She has heard uncle Raman was a freedom fighter and a follower of the Congress party. Their country attained freedom in the previous year. There was a march and some celebration near her home on that day by a group of people. Janu didn't quite understand what has changed since she didn't witness any change from before. Every day went as usual. But uncle Raman spoke quite passionately about it when he visited. Janu finally deduced it as some important grown up topics since every adult or everyone older than her(since her brother Achu was also included) listened and nodded to his every words. Everyone always listens when uncle spoke. But in the case of toilet, despite his attempts of persuasion everyone else in his house still preferred the open. The urinals also were only used at night. In daytime people just went outside.
