Avery's POV
A Few Days Later.
“Are we all set?!”
“Yes, sir!” We all responded to our supervisor, Mr. Larry. I looked around the thick forest, and couldn't help but feel this anxiety building up in my chest.
Today was the day we were all set for the treasure hunt. We all stood in pairs assembly, listening to Mr. Larry who was giving us instructions.
My mind was far away, everyone was excited about this hunt except from me. The reason was that I have a very weak wolf which means that I haven't shifted my whole life and won't be able to shift in time of danger in the forest.
Anna has only spoken to me once and it was as if that moment suck away all her energy, because after that day, she has been resting and I could only feel her presence once in a while.
I turned to look at Jameson, who was jotting down some clues to finding the treasure Mr. Larry was tipping us about.
“And that will be all. Does anyone have a question?” Mr. Larry asked. Jameson's eyes found mine, I instantly looked away for him not to think that I was staring at him.
“Don't you have a question?” he asked.
“No,” my response was instant. I still regretted the fact that I made a fool out of myself in front of him the last time we were talking about the treasure after class.
‘What would he think of me now?’ I thought, massaging my temple. I was still in my thoughts when a question someone asked caught my attention.
“If we give up and can't find our way out. How will we return?” A student asked.
“You guys were given a belt, right? Mr. Larry asked and we all chorused yes, I looked down at the belt around my waist.
“For no reason should you take it off. The blue button stands for ‘the treasure has been found’ the red one signifies danger and the green one is if you get tired and wanna go home. But there is a rule, you and your partner must give up together,” he explained and I nodded weakly.
I looked over at Jameson with another goal in mind. All I have to do is to make us give up together. My gut feeling about this treasure hunt was making me feel otherwise.
“Are we good?”
“Yes, sir!”
“Good. Now carry your bags and come back being a hero! This treasure would bring protection, prosperity, happiness, long life…..” he continued while we all entered the Forest.
My bag was hanging on my shoulder while I followed behind Jameson. Mr. Larry's voice grew distant until we couldn't hear him completely. Absent-mindedly, I followed Jameson.
We haven't said a word to each other and I was liking the atmosphere until I realized that there were no other students with us.
“We are the only ones here,” I said with my gaze on his back as I stopped walking. But he didn't stop, without responding, he continued walking and I glanced around.
“We are the only ones here!” I shouted, making him stop. He turned with a lazy expression. After the day we found out that we were mates, it was as if he had become more mature and his expression was always full of seriousness.
“I heard you the first time,”
“Then why did you pretend to be deaf?” I snapped at him, not liking the fact that he wasn't being the way ‘I wanted him to’.
His gaze lingered on me for a moment before he let out a long sigh.
“I have no words to say to you,” and with that, he continued walking. My nervousness was setting it as I looked up at the sky.
My eyes may be my cutest weapon and have a curve like that of a cat. But I'm night-blind. I don't want him finding out about this and making fun of me with it.
I continued following him, bringing out my phone but there was no service at all.
I was still walking when I stumbled against a big stone.
“Ouch!” I wailed, shut my eyes to take in the pain. Opening them, I picked myself up and saw that my knees were bruised.
Raised my head and found out that Jameson wasn't with me. Fear gripped my heart as I jerked up, the sun was beginning to set and I glanced around the forest.
“J-Jameson,” I mumbled, not caring about the pain I feel on my knees.
“Jameson!” I yelled loudly, with my heart beating fast as I tried to walk forward. I winced when I felt a jolt of pain coursed through my veins from my knees.
“Is the wound deep?” I paused in my tracks when I heard a voice. I turned and found an old woman, she was holding a cane taller than her.
“W-Who are you?”
“I live here,” she responded, smiling creepily. I walked backward, picking up my bag. About to press the danger button, I found out that my belt has been damaged.
My face shone terror, froze in my spot with my eyes glued on the old woman. The wrinkle under her cheeks was nearly covering her eyes.
She was dressed in a black cloak and the atmosphere around her was screaming danger. She paused, sniffing the air and raised a brow.
“Your wolf is weak,” she stated.
“I don't want to talk to you,”
“I want to help you,”
“I don't need your help,” I clenched my words.
“Maybe you should….”
“Ah!” My heart almost leap out of my chest when a hand touched me from behind. I turned and found Jameson gazing at me with a slight frown.
“Were you talking to yourself?” He questioned.
“No, no, no. I-I….” I stammered, pointing at the old woman.
“What are you pointing at?” I turned to face the woman but dread watched over me. She isn't there anymore. My eyes widened in shock, gawking at Jameson who still have this confusion all over his face.
