Chapter Nine

1207 Words
The Truth He Hid The mansion had never felt so quiet. Not even on Elena's first night. Not even during the storm. Not even when she'd discovered Vivian on the third floor. This silence was different. Heavy. Painful. The kind of silence that comes after something breaks. And tonight— something had definitely broken. Damien stood across from her. Blood stained his shirt. A bruise was already forming along his jaw. Yet somehow he still looked composed. Controlled. As if he hadn't nearly been shot ten minutes ago. Elena stared at him. Waiting. He knew exactly what she wanted. The truth. The entire truth. No more secrets. No more half-answers. No more "stay out of it." Just the truth. Finally. The remaining guards quietly left the hallway. Giving them privacy. Neither of them spoke immediately. Rain continued to hammer against the windows. The storm showed no signs of ending. Much like the storm inside Elena's chest. Finally she broke the silence. "How long?" Damien looked at her. "What?" "How long have you known me?" His jaw tightened. A small reaction. But enough. "Years." The answer hit her harder than expected. Years. Not months. Not weeks. Years. Elena laughed softly. Not because anything was funny. Because she couldn't believe it. "You watched me for years?" "It wasn't like that." "Then explain it." For once, Damien didn't immediately respond. Instead, he looked exhausted. Like a man reliving old wounds. Finally he spoke. "Your father saved my life." The hallway fell silent again. "My father didn't even know you." "He did." Elena froze. "What?" Damien looked toward the rain-covered windows. His expression distant. Painfully distant. "Your father worked for my family." Her heart skipped. No. That couldn't be right. Her father had never mentioned anything like that. Ever. "He wasn't just an employee," Damien continued quietly. "He was one of the few people my father trusted." Elena struggled to process the information. Everything she'd believed suddenly felt unstable. "My father never told me." A sad smile appeared briefly on Damien's face. "He wasn't allowed to." "What does that mean?" The sadness vanished. Replaced by something darker. "Victor." Just the name changed the atmosphere. Instantly. "He was stealing information from my family's company." Elena listened carefully. Years of history seemed to sit behind every word. "My brother discovered it first." Ethan. The brother Damien lost. Pain flashed through his eyes. "He wanted proof." The storm outside intensified. Thunder rolled through the sky. "He asked your father for help." Elena's chest tightened. Because she already knew this story wouldn't end well. "My father agreed." Damien nodded. "They gathered evidence." Silence. Then— "Victor found out." The words landed heavily between them. Elena felt sick. She already knew what came next. "My brother was murdered." She closed her eyes. And when she opened them again— Damien was staring at the floor. Like he could still see that day. Still feel it. Still hear it. "And my father?" The question came quietly. Almost afraid. Damien's eyes lifted to hers. The guilt there nearly broke her heart. "He died protecting me." The world stopped. Everything stopped. For a second Elena couldn't breathe. "What?" His voice lowered. "The attack wasn't supposed to happen that day." She felt dizzy. Her legs suddenly weak. "I was eighteen." The memory clearly haunted him. "They came for me." Elena's pulse pounded painfully. "Your father got me out." The silence stretched. "He stayed behind." A lump formed in her throat. No. No. No. Damien looked away. Like he couldn't bear to watch her reaction. "He saved my life." The words shattered something inside her. Because suddenly— her father's death wasn't some random tragedy anymore. It had a face. A reason. A story. And Damien had carried that story alone for years. Tears burned behind her eyes. She quickly looked away. Trying to process everything. Trying to breathe. Trying not to fall apart. Then another realization hit. A terrible realization. Slowly she turned back toward him. "The contract." Damien went still. "The money." Silence. "The mansion." More silence. Understanding flooded through her. "Oh my God." His jaw tightened. "You weren't hiring me." "No." The answer came immediately. Honest. Painfully honest. "You were protecting me." Damien didn't deny it. Which somehow hurt more. Elena laughed softly again. This time because tears were threatening to fall. "You idiot." The insult surprised him. "What?" "You absolute idiot." For the first time all night— genuine confusion appeared on Damien's face. "You carried this alone?" Her voice cracked. "For years?" Neither spoke. The answer was obvious. Of course he had. That's what Damien did. He carried impossible burdens. Alone. Always alone. The realization hurt. More than she expected. "Why didn't you tell me?" The question lingered between them. Damien looked at her for a long moment. Then— "Because I knew you'd leave." Her heart stopped. The honesty in his voice stole her breath. For once there were no walls. No masks. No carefully chosen words. Just truth. Raw and vulnerable. "You barely knew me." "I knew enough." His eyes held hers. Steady. Intense. Dangerous. "I knew you deserved a normal life." The words hit her directly in the chest. "And I knew being near me would ruin that." Elena stared at him. Unable to speak. Because for the first time— she saw Damien clearly. Not the billionaire. Not the mysterious employer. Not the dangerous man everyone feared. Just Damien. A lonely man trying desperately to protect everyone except himself. The realization was devastating. And beautiful. And terrifying. Because suddenly— Rule Number Four felt impossible. Neither looked away. The air between them changed. Softened. The distance suddenly felt too small. Or maybe not small enough. Elena took one step forward. Then another. Damien didn't move. Didn't speak. Just watched her. His eyes dropped briefly to her lips. Then returned to her eyes. The tiny movement sent her pulse racing. Dangerous. Very dangerous. "You should hate me." His voice sounded rough. She almost laughed. "Why?" "For lying." "You were protecting me." "For manipulating the situation." "You were protecting me." "For watching over your family without permission." Elena shook her head slowly. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. "You're really bad at accepting forgiveness." A surprised laugh escaped him. Small. Brief. Real. Her heart instantly betrayed her. Again. Wonderful. Then Damien stepped closer. And suddenly— all the air disappeared from the hallway. His voice lowered. "Elena." The way he said her name should be illegal. Seriously. Illegal. "What?" Neither moved. The storm raged outside. The mansion remained silent. And for one beautiful, terrifying second— it felt like they were the only two people in the world. Then a loud crash echoed from somewhere downstairs. Both of them froze. Reality returned instantly. Danger. Victor. The threat wasn't over. Not even close. A guard came running around the corner. Breathing hard. Pale. Terrified. And the moment Elena saw his face— she knew something was wrong. Very wrong. "Sir." Damien immediately turned. "What happened?" The guard swallowed. Hard. Then delivered the words that changed everything. "Victor left a message." Silence. "What message?" The guard looked directly at Elena. Fear filled his eyes. Then he whispered: "He says he has your brother."
