"I really can’t accept this," I said, pressing the pack currency voucher back into the beta assistant's hands. It felt heavy, too heavy, like the weight of all my mother’s hospital bills packed into that single piece of paper.
"Miss Rivers, it's a token of gratitude," the assistant insisted, his tone low but firm. His wolf an imposing presence, though clearly in control. He towered over me, his aura radiating both authority and insistence. "Lady Esmeralda values what you did."
