Things stayed quiet for a while.
Not peaceful—just quiet, like the calm before a storm.
Kade and I still spent time together, but something felt different. He smiled less. He checked his phone more often. Sometimes, when I spoke, he seemed far away, lost in thoughts he didn’t share.
I noticed everything.
One afternoon, after school, I saw him talking to a man near the school gate. The man was older, tall, and serious. Kade’s body went stiff when he noticed me watching. The man said something I couldn’t hear, then walked away without looking back.
Kade avoided my eyes.
“Who was that?” I asked carefully.
“No one,” he said too quickly.
The answer didn’t feel right.
That night, my chest felt heavy. I kept thinking about his face, the way fear had flashed across it for a second. Kade wasn’t just hiding feelings.
He was hiding something bigger.
Two days later, the truth found me.
I overheard two teachers talking in the hallway.
“…his transfer was temporary,” one said.
“Yes,” the other replied. “If things don’t settle, he’ll be moved again.”
My heart stopped.
Moved again?
I confronted Kade that same day. We stood behind the school building, the place where we always talked when the world felt too loud.
“You’re leaving,” I said. It wasn’t a question.
He closed his eyes slowly. “I didn’t want you to find out like this.”
“When?” I asked, my voice shaking.
“Soon,” he said. “Very soon.”
The words hurt more than anything I had heard before.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.
“Because every time I looked at you,” he said softly, “I wanted to stay.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“So you were just going to disappear?” I asked.
“I thought it would hurt less,” he replied.
He was wrong.
Silence stood between us, heavy and painful.
“I don’t need protection,” I said. “I need honesty.”
“I know,” he whispered. “And I’m sorry.”
That night, I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, my heart breaking slowly.
Some secrets don’t destroy trust because they are cruel—
they destroy it because they are afraid.
And now, everything between us was about to be tested.
