“Liana! Liana!”
Sammy’s voice rang out across the library.
I had tucked myself away in the restricted section — a quiet, slightly eerie corner we’d nicknamed the curse spot. Hardly anyone came there unless they had a reason… or were up to something.
Being a student at Lassies High usually meant you came from a well-off family. Most girls here carried themselves with that sort of effortless confidence money brings.
I didn’t.
My background barely lined up with the school’s expectations. Truth be told, I only got in because of my grades.
Mum’s a single parent, doing her best to raise three rowdy boys and one bookish girl — me. It’s not easy, and it shows sometimes.
You’re probably wondering about my dad.
Yeah… let’s leave that for another time.
And alright — I’ll admit it — I’ve picked up a few bad habits along the way.
Back in the Library
“Would you mind coming along, beautiful lady?”
She stood there in a light white dress, the hem sitting just above her knees. There was something oddly delicate about her — the sort of smile that made you pause without quite knowing why.
She couldn’t have been older than eight… or at least, that’s what I thought.
“Alright… but where exactly are we going, then? This place seems a bit too lively, don’t you think?”
I hadn’t meant to say that last bit out loud — I’d practically muttered it.
Still, she heard me.
Every word.
“It’s paradise, beautiful lady.”
“Sorry—what?”
“Liana, wake up…”
Sammy gave my shoulder a gentle shake, pulling me back.
I blinked, disoriented.
“Oh… right. Just a dream…”
She frowned slightly, clearly puzzled.
“What sort of dream?”
“I—I…”
I stammered over my words.
“I—I…”
“Snap out of it, Liana. Mr Mars is on his way here, and you’re still in the curse spot — I mean, we are!”
“Oh, brilliant…” I muttered. “Sammy, help me with these books, will you? And please, hurry.”
“Me? Hurry? Oh my—Liana, you still read this?”
“Not now, Sammy!”
Before we could escape, footsteps echoed down the corridor.
Slow. Steady. Getting closer.
Our breaths hitched, uneven, our legs trembling slightly with fear.
“Sammy? Liana?”
“Jay… Jayden?”
We said his name at the exact same time.
“What are you girls doing here?”
“W–what do you mean?” Sammy shot back. “Why are you here?”
I tried to respond, but the words wouldn’t come out properly.
“I—I…”
My leg suddenly gave way beneath me, and I dropped straight to the floor with a thud.
“Ow!”
Sammy and Jayden burst out laughing.
Jayden’s POV
Sammy and Liana have been my closest mates for as long as I can remember.
Everything with them is fun — sometimes even a bit chaotic. They can be annoying, sure, but life’s never dull when they’re around.
Well… not until they start nicking my clothes during sleepovers like it’s perfectly normal
"Mr.Mars..."
Sammy hesitated
“Mr Mars?”
Jayden got puzzled.
“Here… help me get Liana up.”
The library door creaked as it slowly shut.
“Don’t worry,” I muttered, “I can manage on my own.”
I tried to stand, but pain shot through my leg, forcing me to wince.
Sammy, clearly losing patience, grabbed me by the arms, while Jayden supported my legs.
The three of us hurried over and ducked behind a bookshelf, half-dragging me along like I weighed nothing.
In Class
“Miss Hart (Liana), Miss Cortser (Sammy), and Mr Nerde—”
Mrs Guts’ voice rang sharply across the room.
“You’ve missed three lessons again!”
She looked ready to explode, as usual.
“We’re sorry, Mrs Guts,” we said in unison.
“I’m placing the three of you into separate classes.”
“If you do that, we might as well skip every lesson,” Sammy muttered.
“What did you just say, Miss Cortser?”
“We’re truly sorry, Mrs Guts,” Liana corrected quickly. “Please don’t go through with that.”
“Fine. Off to your seats. Now.”
“Watch what you say, Sammy. I just saved us.”
Sammy only rolled her eyes, completely ignoring me.
Jayden stayed quiet, acting as though he had nothing to do with any of it.
“Annoying…” I muttered.
'Lunch Time'
“Umm… guys, I’m not hungry.”
We sat around the dining table, the three of us squeezed into our usual corner.
“What do you mean by that, Linny?” Sammy complained, frowning.
“We could take you out to dinner if it’s about money,” Jayden added casually.
“Right!” Sammy chimed in.
“Hm…” I sighed, unsure.
“So… is that a yes?” Sammy pressed.
“Mm… okay then,” I muttered.
“Hey, guys—”
Earlier That Day
Jackie — a first-rate bully at Jassie High — only held her power because a quarter share of the school had been handed over to her family. She took full advantage of it, picking on anyone she considered beneath her… and sometimes even those above, if she felt like it.
“Oops…”
“Jackie!” Sammy snapped, glaring at her.
Jackie’s attention had shifted to me the moment she heard I was just a scholar. After all, she couldn’t stand the idea that someone “nerdy” could also be… well—effortlessly pretty.
So she made her move.
Deliberately.
The cold splash hit before I could react—boba tea soaking straight through my white shirt.
“I—It’s okay, Sam… I’ll just go clean this up,” I stammered.
I turned to leave.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Jackie’s voice cut in sharply.
Before I could react, Jackie shoved me back.
I lost my balance and hit the ground hard, my chair clattering behind me. My skirt rode up slightly from the fall, leaving me exposed in a way that made my stomach drop.
“Liana…” Jayden and Sammy gasped.
Within seconds, a crowd gathered.
Whispers. Snickers. Then laughter.
They circled, watching.
Judging.
I couldn’t take it.
Tears blurred my vision as I scrambled up and ran.
“That’s it. I’m done with your rubbish, you—” Sammy snapped, her voice shaking with fury as she lunged at Jackie.
The two of them collided, fists flying without hesitation.
The crowd cheered.
Some even laughed.
But Jayden just stood there for a moment—
frozen.
Unsure who to go after.
